We had the good fortune of connecting with Dashama Konah Gordon and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dashama Konah, maybe we can start at the very start – the idea – how did you come up with the idea for your business?
When I was 7 years old, my mother lost her mind and both of my parents were addicted to drugs, so I was sent to live with strangers in foster homes. This early childhood trauma led me to realize how important mental health is for humanity.

Years later, when I was 18 years old I was hit by a car going 45 mph while riding my bike. That impact lead me to develop scoliosis of the spine and doctors all told me there was nothing that can heal that. I would have to live with the pain for my whole life they said.

A few years later, at 24 years old I went through a period of depression that lasted a year. I had lost all enthusiasm for life and didn’t know my life purpose. I had emotional and physical pain that I didn’t know how to deal with at that young age and I was searching for purpose or meaning. I had been working 12 hour days 7 days a week to create the “American Dream” but no matter how hard I worked, I just felt depleted, depressed and could not seem to get ahead. On the outside it looked like I was living the American dream. I had a beautiful boyfriend, a great paying corporate job and had just purchased a 3 bedroom home on a golf course in Boca Raton. My body was in great shape since I was a bikini model on the side, but on the inside I felt empty, depleted and lifeless.

One day, I asked myself: what would I do if money was no object? what could bring joy to my life again?

This question sparked a search on google, “Inner Peace” and I found a yoga teacher training about an hour from my home. I didn’t know if that would help me, but I just remembered that in yoga classes, I always felt better. It brought me peace and even when it lead to a healing, crying release at the end, I always felt it was a safe haven I could turn to when life felt hard or overwhelming.

Immediately I signed up for the yoga teacher training and that decision changed my life forever.

During that immersion, I surrendered completely. I allowed myself to cry, heal and let go of all the pain I had been carrying for so long. And even though the practices such as chanting, or silent meditation were not easy for me or comfortable at first, I slowly learned to love them and after a few weeks, I found myself singing with joy for the first time in a long time. After 7 weeks, I was walking on the beach and for the first time in my life I felt a resounding sense of peace for hours. It was as if I dissolved and I was one with everything. The sound of Om resounded in my mind for hours and I felt and knew that yoga was the most powerful medicine that could heal anything.

After that, I didn’t plan to become a yoga teacher, since almost 20 years ago no one was really making a full time living teaching yoga. But I was so passionate, I just wanted to share this powerful gift with as many people as I possibly could. So I started teaching and everyone fell in love with yoga that I shared it with. My enthusiasm was infectious in a very positive way. So I started to attract some really great support. One of the clients I met hired me full time which replaced my full time job income and allowed me to focus on teaching yoga full time. He also helped me start my yoga YouTube channel, which was one of the first YouTube channels online in 2006. I started the first even online yoga challenge, 30 day yoga challenge, since I wanted to help people develop a daily yoga practice so they could feel the benefits that I had felt.

My 30 day yoga challenge went viral on YouTube and reached millions of people in 2008, 2009, 2010. After that, a flood of other yoga teachers came and copied my challenge and yoga began to go viral online which I feel has lead to it become mainstream.

I healed my scoliosis with Flow State yoga as well as my inner child traumas and so much more.

In 2011 I started my school , Flow State Institute, to certify yoga teachers and health coaches, so I could help the millions of people who needed healing. And I published my first book Journey to Joyful, and created 32 yoga DVDs that were sold in Walmart, target, Best Buy and many places online. I also was invited to be a keynote speaker at the United Nations for International Day of Happiness and was inducted into the Happiness Hall of Fame at Stanford.

My journey was lead by passion and even though there were a number of challenges along the path, it has been the most rewarding and nourishing healing journey to be able to help millions of people discover the transformational power of Flow State yoga and lead them to become certified teachers as well. My teaching has impacted over 100 million people across my partnerships including Daily Yoga app, I am the top yoga teacher to their 60 million subscribers, and Curejoy Ayurveda on FB, with nearly 10 million fans, etc.

I still lead Flow Stat retreats and love to share with other women the path of divine feminine energy, Flow, that healed me and millions of others. It was only when I allowed myself to Let Go, surrender and be guided by love, joy and passion that I found my way to the greatest life of fulfillment and abundance beyond my wildest dreams. I want that for everyone on earth. I am on a mission for everyone to have access to this healing and life enhancing path. It is the best bio hack on earth and the fountain of. youth. People ask me all the time why I didn’t age in 20 years, and I strongly believe it is because of a daily Flow State Yoga practice. Flow State yoga is not like anything else being taught. It is a combination of ancient wisdom, modern technology of bio hacking, longevity science, eastern and western wellness, healing and life transformation. This is the medicine of the future. Quantum energy medicine that can heal anything from the inside out.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I was always drawn to business. As a young girl my sisters and I created a milk shake stand in the back yard and sold each other milkshakes for leaves as money. In high school I started a non profit fund raiser sponsored by businesses with a raffle to fund my mission to save the Redwood forest. I was in the DECA marketing club in high school and Toastmasters to learn how to speak publicly in middle school. I read the book “how to be like women of influence : 20 of the greatest women of the 21st century” when I was 14 and it changed my life. I saw that I too could one day be a great leaders, despite having no parents and not being ‘given’ anything to start with. I learned early that our greatness is not determined by what we have, but by the character of who we become. So early I determined to hone my character to become a woman of compassion, generosity, service, impact, courage, contribution and to create something that can help as many people as possible.

I later applied these principles to my business. it was not an easy journey, but I learned about Flow State by being in and out of flow. When I was in flow life was fully supporting me. I felt life was effortlessly guiding me toward a divine destiny and synchronisity upon synchronisity lead me to the path of Grace and Flow. I felt guided and supported when I graduated from my first yoga teacher training in 2005. I felt guided and supported when I launched my YouTube channel in 2006 and my videos went viral. I felt guided and supported when I launched the world’s first yoga challenge, 30 day yoga challenge and it went viral on YouTube in 2008. I felt guided and supported when I published my first book Journey to Joyful and it took me on a world tour for over 10 years traveling around the world leading yoga teacher trainings and retreats and speaking on stages such as United Nations for International Day of Happiness and at the Stanford Happiness Hall of Fame. I felt guided and supported when I was awarded Yogini of the Year and put on the cover of New Life / New York Yoga Magazine. I felt guided and supported when I started leading retreats in Bali long before Bali became popular.

But there were numerous times I was dramatically out of flow, which taught me so much. I crashed and burned from work related burnout 3-4 times over the past 20 years, each time it taught me to let go and allow life. To learn to Flow and be in my Divine Feminine Energy which is powerful, nourishing and life enhancing.

It was through my journey of work related burnout and being too much in my masculine energy that I was guided to study, practice, master and teach Flow State methods.

This lead me to my ultimate purpose and what I’m most passionate about teaching others, especially women, to follow the path of flow.

That lead me to develop the Flow State Institute, Flow State app, Flow State nutritional supplements and we are also creating the Flow State movie, podcast the will release the book next year as well.

It also lead me to develop the Bright Future Foundation.

It was always in my heart to serve children, women, families and those who need extra support through philanthropic work. Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love El Matador Beach in Malibu for a beautiful day in nature. Sunsets there are magical! And lunch at Nobu with ocean view 🙂 I also love Cafe Gratitude in Venice Beach and the Huntley in Santa Monica for a beautiful view with dinner. I love hiking in Topanga there’s a magical waterfall trail you can enjoy peace and serenity. There are some great theaters, in West Hollywood, and I would go to a concert at the Hollywood Bowl. The bio hacking centers and wellness scene in LA are really my thing, so I’d go do some infared sauna and cold plunging, maybe some cryotherapy and my friend Cyan is the best massage therapist he offers 3 hour massages with sound healing life changing journey in Topanga. One of my favorite places to walk is along the cliff in Santa Monica at sunset, there’s a magical rose garden there and so many beautiful trees you can enjoy. LA has a lot of magic to offer so I hope you enjoy some of these options I shared. Feel free to reach out and lmk if you do!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I have so many blessings to be grateful for. In the early part of my path, my client Harlan Kilstein helped me launch my YouTube channel so I owe him a lot of gratitude. He believed in me before I even knew my own potential. My sisters, especially Bokhara and Jophiel were there for me every step of the way always rooting for me and supporting me to follow my heart. And my aunt Robyn, who is the most compassionate loving selfless generous soul I have ever known. My grandmothers Pearl and Esther who showed me what a divine loving mother can be. My students, fans and supporters who gave me a purpose to keep serving and making impact. My spiritual mothers Sirah Vettese, Elle Schweisow, Patsy Heisenger, Diane McKnight, and others who were there for me as mother’s along my path. And some of my greatest teachers have been Tony Robbins, Jim Rohn, Abraham Hicks, Oprah was a huge inspiration since I was very young since we had a very similar story in our early childhood so she showed me that anything is possible regardless of where you start out. My spiritual family Sri Preetaji and Sri Krishna founders of the Ekam Oneness Temple, Sadhguru, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, and God. Nothing would have been possible without the grace of God, who is always with me, guiding me and supporting us all, every step of the way. Also, big should out to Mother Earth, my true mother. Since I lost my mother at age 7, I turned to Mother Earth from a young age and she taught me everything.
