We had the good fortune of connecting with Omer Basatemur and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Omer, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I’ve always wanted to be my own boss, I just knew I would have to find something I was passionate about enough to do every day and feel good about it.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I began cooking in my early 20’s, and opened my first restaurant at 25. I’ve always had a rigorous work ethic, knowing the daily stresses and sacrifices of owning restaurants. I always felt it fit my personality well, and no matter the challenges that arise, I could overcome them.

My first restaurant was named after my daughter Kaya, back in 2005. I knew if I did that, I would do everything to succeed with her name attached to it.

We are now the longest running plant based (vegan) restaurant in NJ, going on our 20th year in business.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Depending on what my friends interests were, I’d gauge it on that. Living in NJ, there are so many different things to do and explore. NYC and Philly are within an hour drive, beaches and mountains, historical live music venues, professional sports teams, and some of the best restaurants the world has to offer.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Shout out to everyone who is willing to put compassion above everything, making it possible to operate successful plant based restaurants
