We had the good fortune of connecting with Haley Coats Beaven and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Haley, we’d love for you to start things off by telling us something about your industry that we and others not in the industry might be unaware of?
It’s not all glamours! Sometimes makeup artists are covered in blood, dirt, sweat, (all fake of course) but definitely not glamorous. One day you can be in a luxurious studio or hotel working on a beautiful flawless face and the next day be creating monsters in an abandoned house. That’s what keeps it interesting to me though.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I grew up in Arkansas and my dream as a kid was to do makeup for movies. I never thought it could be possible but I thought moving to LA would still be fun so I got a job as a live in nanny out here and moved 2 weeks later. That was really the only way I would feel comfortable moving or be able to afford it. It was really scary because I had never met these people in person. I met them online. I don’t know if you call that being adventurous or stupid. haha. After my contract with them was up I decided to move into my own little studio apartment and go to makeup school. I attended Makeup Designory in Burbank for a few months. When I graduated I started looking everywhere I could and contacting anyone I could to help me find work. I worked for free A LOT! It was not easy at all. I remember one of the first movies I ever worked on, I worked 20 hours and then got lost on the way home. I pulled over on the side of the freeway and cried! I was like “this sucks. I”m over it”. That didn’t last long though. A few days later I was doing another makeup gig. I hustled. When I started having people I recognized from TV sitting in my chair and was able to afford a bed, thats when I was like “ok, I might be able to make this work”. The thing I’m most proud of in my career is getting a Grammy for working on The Beatles “Eight Days a Week” documentary for Hulu. It was pretty amazing working with The Beatles and Ron Howard. When I decided to have kids and raise a family, I slowed down working as an artist and began creating a makeup and skincare brand so I could stay home as much as possible. I created the brand “Caroline Owen”. It’s my kids middle names. It’s been a lot of fun!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’m an ourdoorsy person and California’s ladscape is just so beautiful I would have to take them camping. My family and I like to go to Leo Carillo state beach and also Malibu Beach RV Park. Both are just right across the street from the beach. Horseback riding is fun too! You can do it on the beach, Griffith Park, or even around the Hollywood sign at Sunset Ranch in Hollywood. A lot of my friends like to go to sitcoms or game shows when they come. It’s fairly easy to get tickets online. Universal Studios is always a great time as well. Doing the backlot tour is always a favorite! We would also be going to the flower district downtown.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My parents for being helpful instead of discouraging when I told them on a whim that I wanted to move to Los Angeles.
