We had the good fortune of connecting with Jada Renee and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jada, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I chose to pursue a career in the arts because it’s the only thing I know. I’m a creative and have always been a creative.

I always wanted to be an artist but I would always struggle to see how that was possible because I never saw a successful artist doing what I wanted to do, which was “everything” lol. I wanted to be successful doing any and everything that I felt was creative and cool and make profit from those things. So rather it was painting , fashion , making music playlists , throwing parties I always wanted to be happy in life doing those things. Money doesn’t really come into play until you get older but I always wanted to be happy doing my art.

My family on both sides also have artistic talents in the arts in terms of drawing , poetry, writing , painting and music so I feel I got the creative bug naturally. None of my family members ever pursued these creative talents as a full career path , they were more-so creative hobbies that came naturally but weren’t able to be fully developed based on the times and circumstances my family members were raised in. I don’t event think the interest sparked that far to go any further than a hobby simply because the arts just made them happy.

For example my dad is an artist and has always been an artist but based on the time he was raised , art and careers in the arts weren’t pushed for black people or just inner city neighborhood boys in general. Same for my mom I feel she has a natural ability for styling and fashion which she got from my grandmother. She also has great financial planning and I always said she could own a fashion shop lol sell sunglasses, purses and cool outfits but based on how she was raised and the time she was raised the focus wasn’t for young black girls to become creative entrepreneurs. It was to find a husband and start a family. Both are honestly very important today but it wasn’t back then. But since these things kind of get instilled in your generation you do what you know until the tide changes for the next generation.

I feel that by the time I was born in the 90’s the tide had officially changed and our generation was able to be more creative with the use of media , and technology.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Closing out 2023 I’m most proud of completing our mental health pop up shop we had earlier last year on Melrose Avenue. The event relaunched the INDI clothing brand and I’m very excited to showcase our new designs for 2024.

I’m also very proud of our art studio renovation project. We worked on the renovation over the past 3 years and renovated my grandparents home into a community art studio for the youth of my home town in Cleveland, Ohio.

I thought the renovation would be the hardest thing I’ve done with my business so far lol but it honestly became easier during every step of the way now that I’m looking back on the process. I think the biggest lesson is having faith. Having faith in the process but even more faith in yourself to handle the moments you think you have no answers. It’s in the darkest moments of the process that I really found myself and found my strength in God and my guides to help me stay grounded in self confidence in knowing this is apart of my destiny and legacy.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend is coming to visit the LA area for a week these are the things we would have to do in order for sure !

Roscoe’s Chicken & Waffles
PCH Coast
Shopping on Melrose
LA Taco Truck Tour!
Marathon Clothing Visit
LA Nightlife

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to shoutout my mother for raising me to be the independent woman I am today. I feel she sacrificed so much to simply raise myself and my younger brother and I want my business to be able to really showcase what family legacy looks like so that my family can know it’s simply possible.
