We had the good fortune of connecting with Cassie Zeng and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Cassie, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
As a visual artist freelancer, the balance for me is constantly searching for balance. Once I found a balance, I have to broke it to find another new balance, I never stop to do so. Maybe it’s due to the nature of my artistic work, I always get my best photos from the daily life, where every experience becomes a potential source of inspiration. This continuous flow of creativity blurs the lines between work and life, making it challenging to establish a clear boundary. Yet, it’s within this fluidity that I discover the most meaningful expressions of my artistry.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Photography for me, an introverted person, is not just about taking pictures or freezing moments, it’s about creating a connection between me and others, it’s a unique way to convey emotions, tell stories, and capture the beauty of the world around us.

The interplay of light, composition, and emotion fascinates me, I’m constantly seeking new ways to express my perspective through my photographs. Over time, what started as a hobby transformed into a deep-seated passion. I realized that I wanted to dedicate my career to capturing and sharing meaningful moments. I look forward to the limitless opportunities in this dynamic field and the ongoing journey of learning and evolving as a visual storyteller.

When I pursued my master degree in US, experiencing the culture shock, the vibrant mix of cultures here has become the focal point of my art, leading me to explore the complexities of human connection within a multicultural environment. Therefore, my artistic themes have undergone a significant shift, while my earlier work celebrated the beauty of mundane life with peaceful and a poetic way, my current inspiration is drawn from diverse cultural landscape. Living in US has sparked my fascination with exploring identity and the intricate connections between individuals and society.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’d like spending a few days taking my friend to immerse into the art world, like going to Getty Center, Hammer Museum, LACMA. And also the Griffith Observatory, the beautiful city night scene is worthy to go!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d like to give a shoutout to my parents. In my hometown, it’s common for parents to interfere or even decide their children’s future. However, my parents allowed me the freedom to explore and pursue my interests, never limiting my passion. I appreciate it so much!
