Meet Dr. Kate Denniston | Naturopathic Doctor/Holistic Skincare

We had the good fortune of connecting with Dr. Kate Denniston and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dr. Kate, every day, we about how much execution matters, but we think ideas matter as well. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
I’ve always been interested in health on some level, probably influenced by my grandmother who was always researching alternative medicine and making recommendations whenever we caught a bug or needed a boost. For my 6th grade science fair project I created a medicinal lollipop using natural herbs and honey, things my grandmother would often recommend for us when we had a cold. It seems to make sense that I would end up going to medical school to become a naturopathic doctor. During medical school, I struggled a bit with skin issues like acne as well as eczema. I remember feeling so frustrated because all the external treatments I used would help temporarily but the skin issues kept coming back. This led me to use the resources at my disposal to come up with internal, preventative solutions to those issues. Although my private practice in Brentwood started as a general practice, it naturally unfolded to focus on skin issues from an internal, root cause approach. Since then, I have continued to fine-tune my treatments and have developed a very successful protocol to help my patients address skin conditions in a holistic way that is kind and gentle to their bodies. In fact, I am in the process of developing a supplement line that should help most people suffering from these conditions. The line will be called Glojo and should be available for purchase this spring.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
The beauty industry has been disconnected for a very long time. A lot of people spend thousands of dollars on skincare products thinking they just haven’t found the right routine yet to clear their skin, but their skin will never clear until they fix what’s going on underneath the surface. Typically skin issues are a sign that there’s inflammation within the body. Once we support the body skin issues resolve on their own.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
My favorite things about Los Angeles center on its natural beauty. I would take my friend on a hike up Temescal Canyon, where you get a decent workout climbing to the top and are rewarded with beautiful panoramic ocean views. Afterwards, we would take a walk on the beach in Malibu. If the tide is low enough we could investigate the tide pools, searching for shells, sea anemones and perhaps an octopus. Then, would probably head over to the pier and grab a bite to eat at Malibu Farm. Another day I would take her to either Ocean Park in Santa Monica or Venice Beach for pick up beach volleyball games. We might also spend a day exploring Venice, the shops, the canals, and stop at Great White for one of my favorite burritos. Regardless of the day, I would take her to my favorite restaurant, Cobi’s, in Santa Monica, which has really interesting and delicious South Asian cuisine.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d like to dedicate my Shoutout to none other than the grandmother I wrote about earlier, Dolly Steeves, the alternative healer who helped put me on my path.
