Meet Denise Carrillo | Comic Book Writer for The Sapphire Directive

We had the good fortune of connecting with Denise Carrillo and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Denise, how do you think about risk?
Within the comic book industry, it’s a big risk and sacrifice to take the first step into self-publishing. However, we love creating stories and ideas that we want to share with the world. Even though we share the platform with many other artists and stories, we’re willing to take on this risk to stand out above the rest. We’re proud of our creations and hope to achieve value with our art and stories someday.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
As an artist and writer, I am inspired by my love for film, music, and current events. My husband, David, and I use these inspirations to create our art. However, balancing our creative endeavors with managing a household and working day jobs can be challenging. To avoid burnout, we get enough sleep and manage our time effectively. Our next goal is to self-publish and promote our work at conventions and comic stores to reach a wider audience. This requires a lot of energy and effort to capture the attention of comic book readers and consumers who enjoy our genre. Although we are still learning and making mistakes, our ultimate goal is to create stories that provide an enjoyable escape and take readers on thrilling adventures.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
The City of Los Angeles always has great sights and places to visit from day and night. Personally, I choose Redondo Beach or Santa Monica Beach as a hot spot for all-day fun.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to shoutout to others who have created alongside me in making comic books. I’ve been working with David Moreno, my illustrator and husband for over 20 years. Through David, I’ve learned much about comic books and art and shared many ideas and stories with him. A second shoutout to Sable Nance, a fantastic artist and colorist with many great ideas to bring to the table within the comic book industry. And finally, a shoutout to Edward Ambriz, writer for Vlad. I enjoy moments when we read each other’s drafts and share thoughts and ideas for our stories.
