Meet Susannah Darcy | President of BritCan Media, Film & TV Producer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Susannah Darcy and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Susannah, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I wanted to start to use my experience to further my own creative and business goals rather than simply working for others. I was looking for an organization to join that I could help build.
I remember exactly where I was when I decided to change my life and reached out to a producer friend of mine John Curtis who happened to be looking to start something new. We’ve known each other for years and worked on a number of projects together. Actually drove up to Vancouver to meet with him and see if we could re-connect. I had a project I wanted to talk with him about and the desire to use that to build something more.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We formed a company called BritCan Media, a global film and television company with production and distribution capabilities. We also spent a great deal of time creating our own IP. Currently, we have several films in pre-production with budgets in the $15-20M range, with top notch collaboration.
What sets us apart is we understand distribution at its core, as well as production, and use a strict greenlight policy to ensure only the most commercial films get made AND we try and keep ego’s out if it!
I think the best lessons are;
1. We are always learning, so listen
3. Leave ego’s aside, we work as a team
4. We always do what we say
5. We have an “investor first” rule, they are our most important commodity, many producers don’t get that thinking the project is the most important thing. Look after your investors, and they will always support you.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
In Paris, I would take them to the river and have an amazing breakfast watching the river and the city awake. Then I would just walk the city. . At night we would take on the boats that travel along the river. I would try to get to this little wine place about 20 mins outside the city that sells 200 year old wine near Versailles.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Sascha Schneider – He gave me an amazing opportunity to work on FBI International for Dick Wolf’s company during Covid, which brought me to Budapest for 7 months.
Bruno Sepulcher- another incredible opportunity. I was up against Oscar and Emmy winners. I submitted a proposal for a $20M TV project, he gave me the position over of all these award-winning individuals because, I was focused on the show and what was best for it, rather than what it might do for me. He knew I was there to make his show the best I could. That experience changed my life.
I would add my husband Kevin for putting up with me and my production life.
