Meet tidbit | graphic design house

We had the good fortune of connecting with tidbit and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi tidbit, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
My husband Aaron Burke and I formed tidbit in 2006 with the idea of providing our small design house to people we knew, and who knew other people. Aaron has a background in illustration, graphic, web and typography design and I have a background in photography, digital fashion/beauty retouching and graphic design. We knew we had a lot of needs covered between us and our years experience. One of the toughest decisions was choosing a name. We knew it needed to last a long time and not be too cute or au courant. After a large white board of lists, tidbit stood out to us. we liked how the word “reflected” when lowercase, that it harked back to the vintage experience of luaus and small bites, and that it was fun too. Aaron left his corporate job and jumped in full-time while Jen used the company for my freelance work.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Because tidbit covered so many services in the design realm, we are able to be small but mighty in providing everything one may need under on roof. Typical of many small businesses and ironically, we don’t have a fancy website of our work. We are too busy doing the work, the old idiom “the cobbler’s children have no shoes” comes to mind. Our success has been having good relationships with our clientele and getting new work and clients through work-of-mouth. We use some of our social media to keep people updated on our work and latest news, but good reputation is how we have had most of our success.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Where we would probably take out-of-town friends First stop would be to our local beach in Redondo Beach to see the Pacific and take in the lovely ocean and weather.
Next would be one of the many amazing museums we have from the Broad to MOCA. We would of course have to hit up some good dining and cocktails at The Formosa, El Coyote for old LA Mexican food and Canter’s Deli for the rock n roll staple. Our tour would end at our friend’s home tiki bar in Echo Park the HaleKahiki for the best drinks in town, and VERY exclusive.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
For Aaron, we would say Martin Cate of Smuggler’s Cove has embraced the work Aaron does and challenged him to take Aaron’s illustrations and work to even higher levels, Martin’s loyalty and appreciation encourages us to create top notch work that presents his bars in well-regarded light.
For Jen, a thanks to the late photographer Jonathan Skow. He was one of her first retouching clients and recruited her to do graphic design for his wife’s company. Trina Turk. Their leap of faith of Jen’s capabilities lead her to become an art director for Trina Turk, which also lead to other jobs in print and fashion.
