We had the good fortune of connecting with FivesUp Roddy and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi FivesUp, we’d love to hear more about your end-goal, professionally.
I feel like there is never an “end goal”, there is ALWAYS room for improvement and there is always room for you to grow. Be better than the person you were yesterday. Career wise, I don’t just want to rely on my music. I eventually want to expand our brand to businesses we once couldn’t imagine. Meaning having our own business to later having generational wealth so I know when it’s my time my current and future family will be good for life. Yes I want to be known as an artist around the world but I also want to be a business man in different aspects to where I can make money in my sleep from multiple sources.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
What sets me apart from others is that I am a story teller. But I tell my story through different varieties of beats, yes, it could be a drill beat or a simple boom-bap beat regardless I’m telling a story with no lies and from the heart. It’s pain & dedication behind my music because I’m not doing this for myself. I’m doing this for my family, my team, but most importantly for Samaad and Eric. I am most excited for what comes next, I like to take this journey one step at a time so I can have a story and appreciate the hard work I put in to get where I am now. 4 years of making music came quick and now it’s time to graduate and move on to the next objective. Whatever the next mission is, my team and I is 100% ready for it. This is all of our dream. Of course it wasn’t easy but when you have a big team like The 5amily & 2UP Records, it’s nothing that can’t be done. We know that the stressful times will later be a celebration so we work until there is no crumbs left. We stay focused and stay humble because that’s who we are and that’s how we want to present ourselves as a unit.
The lessons I’ve learned is that your dreams isn’t just going to fall on your lap. If you want it that bad you’ll go get it and if you can’t get it then find a way to. This day and age anything is possible and you can be anybody you put your mind to. You just have to focus and put the work in even when you don’t feel like it because one day it’ll pay off. I’m a prime example.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to give a shoutout to my whole team for sticking with me through all the ups and downs. Through the good and the bad they are always there to support me and being sure that I meet all my requirements/goals to make the mission a success. I want to shoutout my manager Quincy, my right-hand Jamal, my cousin Eli, Davay Picasso, Davon (Dreamatic Films), Kimberly Banks, Nyle, The 2UP Twins, all of The 5amily, all my brothers. I make sure I tell them how much they mean to me and how support goes a long way which is always returned because that’s just what brothers do. I can’t forget about my mother Felecia, my sister Sanaa, and my father Derek. I threw all my eggs in the basket with music including dropping out of college and they believed in me and supported me the whole way. From making my (so far) best album upstairs in my mother’s house, to later hearing my little sister playing my songs on her speaker in her room, to later my dad texting and calling me about my songs and letting me know how proud he is of me. Having the biggest support from your own parents is a different feeling that will never go unnoticed and they always motivate me to be a better me. I know they will never guide me wrong.
I want to give the biggest shoutout to my best friend Samaad Frazier that passed away in 2019 and my cousin Eric Wade that later passed away in 2022. Samaad was the reason why I started making music in the first place and Eric is reason why I couldn’t quit. They both play a big role in my music and play a big role in my heart so giving up on my dream is not even an option when those two soldiers are the reason why I do this.
