Meet Gabriel Rivas | Re-recording Mixer, Dialogue Editor, and Music Composer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Gabriel Rivas and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Gabriel, why did you pursue a creative career?
Upon arriving in the USA, my initial goal was to become a mixing engineer. Armed with a background in music and a keen interest in the creative process I was pursuing my Bachelor of Science in Recording Arts at Full Sail University, I dove into learning the intricacies of mixing and mastering. However, fate had other plans in store for me.

Around six months into my journey, I stumbled upon an opportunity to enroll in a film post-production course. Intrigued by the prospect of exploring audio editing for films—a realm I had only heard about in passing—I eagerly seized the chance. Little did I know, this decision would be a turning point in my career.

As I immersed myself in the course curriculum, I found myself captivated by the nuances of tasks like cueing, spotting, and ADR (Automated Dialogue Replacement). Each aspect of post-production opened my eyes to a new realm of possibilities, sparking a newfound passion within me.

However, it was a pivotal moment during my first gig that solidified my path. Tasked with mixing and scoring my friend’s short film, “A Bag of Bread,” I found myself deeply engrossed in the process. From composing the music to editing dialogue and re-recording mixing the entire film, I was in my element.

In that moment, I realized that my true passions lay not just in music composing but also in the intricate art of re-recording mixing for film. It was a revelation that fueled my drive and shaped the trajectory of my creative career.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
In my artistic journey, what sets me apart is my multifaceted expertise encompassing music composing and audio editing—a comprehensive package of audio mastery. However, reaching this point was no easy feat.

Navigating between these diverse skill sets required dedication and perseverance. Balancing both sides of my craft demanded time and commitment, yet I seized every opportunity to work on projects, allowing me to gain invaluable experience at an accelerated pace.

One of the most enriching aspects of my journey has been the opportunity to collaborate with film students as a dialogue editor, re-recording mixer, and music composer. Their feedback and perspectives have broadened my understanding with each project, honing my skills and enhancing my insight.

Moreover, I’ve come to realize that every project is unique, requiring a customized approach to composition and performance. Flexibility and adaptability have been crucial virtues, as there’s no one-size-fits-all formula in music or audio editing. Embracing diversity in projects, even those beyond my usual genre, has been incredibly rewarding, fostering growth and innovation.

Through challenges and triumphs alike, I’ve learned valuable lessons. Quantity, coupled with quality assurance, and occasional ventures beyond my comfort zone have proven to be catalysts for personal and professional growth. Stagnation within familiar territory pales in comparison to the rewards of exploration and experimentation.

My ultimate aspiration is for the world to acknowledge the profound depth and versatility of my craft. My journey stands as a testament to the power of determination and the transformative potential of embracing diverse opportunities. I am deeply grateful that my efforts have been recognized by numerous film festivals and esteemed awards, particularly in categories such as ‘Best Sound Design’ and ‘Best Original Score’ for various films. Through this recognition, I aspire to inspire others to break their boundaries, pursue their passions, and carve out their own distinctive paths in the realm of art and creativity.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my friends were visiting the area, I’d want to ensure they experience the best of what Los Angeles has to offer.

We’d kick off the day bright and early with a picturesque breakfast overlooking the cityscape, setting the perfect tone for the adventure ahead. Then, we’d venture to one of my favorite spots—Santa Catalina Island. Its breathtaking beauty, reminiscent of the Caribbean Sea, promises a day of tranquility and exploration. As evening approaches, we’d immerse ourselves in the vibrant nightlife of Los Angeles, hitting up some of the hottest clubs in town.

We’d delve into the iconic attractions of the city, from renowned museums to hidden gems tucked away in unremarkable corners. A scenic road trip showcasing the best of Los Angeles would be on the agenda, offering glimpses of its diverse neighborhoods and cultural landmarks. As the day draws to a close, we’d embark on a weekend getaway to one of the charming cities just a couple of hours outside of LA, indulging in a well-deserved break amidst stunning landscapes and rich experiences.

Throughout our adventure, I’d emphasize that Los Angeles is a city of endless possibilities, with much left to explore and discover. The warmth of its people and the kaleidoscope of cultures add depth to its allure, making every moment an opportunity for new encounters and experiences. From culinary delights to captivating sights, Los Angeles never fails to leave a lasting impression, promising an unforgettable journey for all who venture here.

I’m truly grateful for the incredible support and guidance I’ve received from several individuals who have played significant roles in shaping my journey. Firstly, I owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to my parents, whose unwavering support allowed me to pursue my dreams of studying abroad. Their encouragement and belief in me have been the foundation of my success.

Secondly, I must acknowledge the invaluable influence of Alonzo Pizarro, my esteemed piano professor and mentor. Throughout my time at the academy “Sol Music” in Peru, his passion for music ignited a fire within me to delve deeper into the world of music. His mentorship not only enhanced my skills but also fueled my determination to excel.

Lastly, I want to extend a heartfelt thank you to the members of the dub stage at Full sail University; Dave Chmela, Jason Strawley. When I ventured into audio post-production, they graciously welcomed me into the dub-stage, where I had the opportunity to observe and learn from him firsthand. Their willingness to share his expertise and mentorship has been instrumental in shaping my passion for film.

Among the countless individuals who have contributed to my journey, these individuals hold a special place in my heart. Their unwavering support and encouragement have been a constant source of inspiration.
