We had the good fortune of connecting with Frank Rocco and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Frank, other than deciding to work for yourself, what was the single most important decision you made that contributed to your success?
The last course I took at the Fashion Institute of Technology was called Professional Procedures and used the Book called ASMP Professional Business Practices in Photography as the text book. My teacher, Deborah Klesenski said that “the next step” was to join a professional organization like ASMP (The American Society of Media Photographers). This is the advice I would give to anyone now. Don’t just join; get involved! The more you put in, the more you get out. I served on the board for years and eventually served as president for five years. I then served on the national board for six years. I think networking and volunteering is one of the most beneficial things you can do to ensure your own success while also helping others and serving your community.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I love to shoot fashion and beauty images mostly because of the opportunity to be playful and creative with lighting, poses and just about every aspect of making images (both still and motion). There is a reputation for fashion photographers to be prima donnas or at least be high-maintenance. I am one of the most easy-going fashion photographers you will meet and work with. I think shoots should be fun and not stressful for clients, makeup artists, models, stylists or anyone. Let’s have a drama-free shoot!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If you come to visit New York for a few days, we would walk Central Park on a Sunday, walk around the East Village on a Friday or Saturday evening and ride a few of the ferries. On Sunday night we would track down to the financial center and see the Irish session at the Dead Rabbit!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I think it would be appropriate to give a shoutout to ASMP.org (The American Society of Media Photographers)
