We had the good fortune of connecting with Shon Curtis and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Shon, let’s start by talking about what inspires you?
As an artist whose work delves deeply into the intersection of blackness and society, I find myself continually drawn to the intricate tapestry of my own experiences and the multifaceted circumstances that shape the human condition. Born and raised in America as a black individual, each image I create is imbued with a profound exploration of culture and identity, forming the underlying thread that weaves through every piece.

In my journey as a photographer, I’ve come to view myself not just as a creator, but as a conscientious observer of society. It is my deeply held belief that as an artist, I carry a responsibility to serve as an honest witness to the world around me, shedding light on both its beauty and complexities.

Influenced by the profound insights of James Baldwin and the soul-stirring compositions of John Coltrane, my approach to photography is guided by intentional love and a childlike curiosity about the world. With each press of the shutter, I aim to capture moments that resonate with authenticity and emotion, inviting viewers to engage in a meaningful dialogue about the human experience.

My journey in photography began at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh, where I honed my craft with a focus on digital photography. It was during this time that I laid the foundation for my career as a freelance photographer, embarking on a path that would ultimately lead me to produce commercial work and portraiture that reflects the essence of my vision and values.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My art is a reflection of my journey through the complexities of blackness and society, as well as an exploration of the boundless possibilities presented by Afrofuturism. It seeks to illuminate the nuances of the human experience with honesty and authenticity, delving deep into the intersection of culture, identity, and social consciousness.

What sets my work apart is its unwavering commitment to these explorations, offering viewers a glimpse into the rich tapestry of emotions and narratives that define our collective existence. Alongside this, I draw inspiration from Afrofuturist ideals, infusing my art with visions of a future where blackness thrives and intersects with technology, science, and imagination.

One aspect of my work that I’m particularly proud of is its ability to spark meaningful conversations and foster connections across diverse communities. By capturing moments that resonate with universal truths and shared experiences, I strive to create art that transcends boundaries and inspires empathy and understanding.

My journey to where I am today has been filled with challenges and setbacks, but each obstacle has been an opportunity for growth and learning. Navigating the competitive landscape of the industry and overcoming personal doubts have pushed me to refine my craft and strengthen my resolve.

Through perseverance and resilience, I’ve carved out a space for myself in the world of photography, rooted in authenticity, integrity, and a deep sense of purpose. My art is not just about creating beautiful images; it’s about using the power of storytelling to shine a light on the issues that matter, to amplify voices that often go unheard, and to inspire positive change in the world.

Ultimately, I hope to challenge perceptions, provoke thought, and foster a greater sense of empathy and connection among all who encounter my work. It’s my belief that art has the power to transcend boundaries and unite us in our shared humanity, and I’m committed to using my platform to make a meaningful impact in the world.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My Mother. Raising a child as a single parent is already tough enough, making sure he gets through public school and graduates while staying out of trouble and navigating colleges. My mother is the most significant reason that I am a fraction of the man I am today.
