We had the good fortune of connecting with Lukas Hasler and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lukas, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
Maintaining a work-life balance as a touring concert organist has been an evolving challenge over the years. Initially, the demands of constant travel and performance schedules made it quite difficult to strike a harmonious equilibrium. However, as I gained more experience and insight into the industry, I’ve learned to navigate this delicate balance more effectively.

Living part-time in both Los Angeles and Austria has played a crucial role in reshaping my approach to work and life. In Los Angeles, the bustling creative scene and diverse cultural experiences have inspired my musical exploration. On the other hand, Austria provides a serene environment that allows for deep reflection and connection with the rich musical traditions of the region.

I’ve come to appreciate the importance of intentional downtime. It’s not just about physical rest, but also mental rejuvenation. Whether it’s enjoying a quiet evening in the Austrian countryside or taking in the vibrant energy of LA, finding moments of stillness amidst the constant movement of a touring schedule has become essential.

Technology has also played a significant role in maintaining this balance. Staying connected with loved ones, even from a distance, helps create a sense of stability and support. Additionally, incorporating mindfulness practices and dedicating time to personal hobbies has been crucial in grounding myself amidst the whirlwind of performances and travel.

Ultimately, I view work-life balance as an ongoing process of adjustment and self-discovery. It’s about recognizing the ebb and flow of the musical journey, understanding the unique demands of the profession, and finding ways to nurture both the artistic soul and personal well-being. Striking this balance allows me to bring my best self to the stage and, in turn, share the beauty of music with audiences worldwide.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My art, as a touring concert organist, is a reflection of my deep connection with the organ and a commitment to sharing the beauty of music with diverse audiences. What sets me apart is not just the technical proficiency in my performances but the passion and emotion that I infuse into every note. I strive to create a transcendent experience for listeners, where the power and richness of the organ transport them to new realms of emotion and imagination.

I am most proud of the journey that has brought me to where I am today. The path to becoming a professional concert organist has been anything but easy. It required years of dedicated practice, perseverance through setbacks, and a constant pursuit of artistic excellence. The challenges ranged from mastering the intricacies of the instrument to navigating the complexities of a nomadic touring lifestyle.

Overcoming these challenges involved a combination of resilience, a supportive network of mentors and peers, and an unshakable belief in my passion for the organ. Each obstacle became an opportunity for growth and learning. The lessons I’ve gleaned along the way include the importance of adaptability, the value of collaboration with fellow musicians, and the need for a balanced approach to work and life.

I am a musical storyteller, and my organ is the instrument through which I communicate emotions, narratives, and shared moments of connection. As I continue to evolve as an artist, my hope is to inspire a renewed appreciation for the organ and contribute to the broader cultural tapestry of music.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.

Embarking on a week-long adventure in Los Angeles with my best friend would be an exhilarating experience, a tapestry woven with the city’s diverse offerings. We’d start with a laid-back day exploring the bohemian spirit of Venice Beach, sampling street food and soaking in the artistic vibe.

Our journey continues with a Hollywood day, immersing ourselves in the Walk of Fame, catching a classic movie, and relishing dinner with a view at Yamashiro. Downtown LA beckons us next, where we’ll brunch in the Arts District, revel in contemporary art at The Broad, and explore the culinary wonders of Little Tokyo.

A coastal interlude unfolds in Santa Monica, where we’ll ride the Ferris wheel, bask on the beach, and dine at The Lobster. We’ll also venture into nature, spending a day at the Getty Center’s art oasis and the tranquil Huntington Library and Botanical Gardens.

Melrose Avenue becomes our shopping haven, with quirky boutiques and street art galore. We’ll hike up to the Griffith Observatory for a breathtaking sunset and savor plant-based delights at Gracias Madre.

As our week culminates, we’ll indulge in glamour at The Ivy for brunch and explore ancient art at the Getty Villa in Malibu. A scenic drive along the Pacific Coast Highway leads us to a farewell feast at Nobu Malibu, surrounded by the rhythmic waves of the Pacific.

This curated journey through LA encompasses the city’s eclectic neighborhoods, cultural gems, and culinary wonders, promising a week of unforgettable moments with my best friend.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Absolutely, without a doubt, my shoutout goes to my incredible family and friends. They are the unsung heroes behind the scenes, providing unwavering support, love, and encouragement throughout my musical journey. Their belief in my passion for the organ and commitment to a life of music has been the bedrock of my success. My friends, too, have been instrumental in shaping my artistic path. Their camaraderie, shared love for music, and understanding of the unique demands of a touring concert organist create a support network that transcends geographical boundaries. Whether we’re celebrating successes or navigating the inevitable setbacks, their presence makes the journey richer and more fulfilling.
