We had the good fortune of connecting with Sarah Gail (they/them/theirs) (no last name) and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sarah Gail (they/them/theirs), what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
Living in a capitalist society, a person’s value is determined by how much profit they can generate. I find it hard for me to exist within the confines of today’s society, and feel that the career of an artist can be subversive, and liberating. I choose to be an artist because art is a powerful tool that I use to inform, inspire, and empower people. I also do it because I enjoy playing, and find that the act of creating art can be healing in and of itself. Now, more than ever it is important for people to acknowledge, and use their energy in order to change the world around them. I create art in hopes that people feel confident enough to do so.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a multidisciplinary artist, meaning that my artistic expression is not confined by mediums. I create based on whichever medium I believe will communicate my message effectively. I have been an “artist” in L.A. for about 10 years, but have been artistic my entire life.

I have, and will continue to use my platform as an artist to speak out against injustices that I, or others have survived. Because of this, many people, and institutions within Los Angeles have attempted to silence, or diminish me by either refusing to work with me, or spreading misinformation about me. Though this has been hurtful at times, and has definitely affected my income as an artist, I persist in doing this work because it is important, and know that the truth can help create change; change that is very much needed in the artworld as well as the rest of society. I have overcome these challenges by creating art, and doing things that bring me joy. I am also grateful to have friends who are supportive of my efforts, and understand why I do the work I do.

I am so very excited to share that starting Friday March 22nd at 8pm (on alternating Friday’s) I will be hosting my very own radio show called The Love Zone on 101.5FM KQBH. This will be an opportunity to develop more of my artistic skills, and share my art with a larger audience.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to shoutout Octavia Butler. Her books changed my life, in that she created worlds for Black people to exist in outside the confines of today’s society. She inspires me to create without fear.

I would also like to shoutout Zora Neale Hurston, whose anthropological books on Black life were critical in me developing a greater understanding of my ancestral history. She also motivates me to tell my story, no matter how insignificant others may make it seem.
