Meet Sofia Leão | Singer-Songwriter & Film Composer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Sofia Leão and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sofia, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Taking risks has truly defined my journey as a singer-songwriter and media composer. When I was just 18, I made the bold decision to leave behind everything familiar in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and head to Boston, USA, to pursue my musical passion at Berklee College of Music. It was a leap into the unknown, leaving behind family, friends, and the comfort of my culture. Yet, I saw it as an opportunity for personal and professional growth. Berklee was a game-changer, offering not just an education but a vibrant community of artists from all over the world. It broadened my musical horizons and taught me resilience as I adjusted to a new way of life. After completing my degree, the next risk came with the decision to move to Los Angeles, driven not by academia but by a desire to dive headfirst into the entertainment industry. It wasn’t an easy road, but this journey has taught me to embrace challenges and stay true to my goals, shaping me into the artist I am today. I’m so grateful for having these opportunities, and living abroad has been the best and most challenging experience of my life!
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My journey as a singer-songwriter, and film composer has been deeply influenced by my lifelong passion for music, fostered by the musical environment at home with my father, a pianist. Beginning piano lessons at age 7 and vocal training at 12, I developed a strong foundation for my artistic expression. At 18, I took a bold step and relocated to Boston to pursue music studies at Berklee College of Music, focusing on Film Scoring and Contemporary Writing and Production. It was during my time at Berklee that I truly discovered my passion for composing music, whether for film or my own songs. This passion led me to embark on my latest project, an EP titled “Portal,” set to release on April 5th, 2024. With songs in my native language, Portuguese, each track serves as an intimate reflection of my inner thoughts and feelings. After graduating from Berklee, I made the move to Los Angeles, where I’m currently working as a freelance composer while continuing to pursue my personal musical endeavors. While the journey has had its challenges, I’ve learned valuable lessons in resilience, creativity, and staying true to myself. Through my music, I aim to share my authentic experiences and emotions, inviting listeners to connect with my art and helping them understand their own feelings.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
For a week-long trip in Los Angeles, I’d focus on nature and unforgettable experiences. As a “La La Land” movie fan, I’d start by hiking to the Griffith Observatory, enjoying stunning views of the city and Hollywood sign. A night at the Hollywood Bowl would be a must for its magical atmosphere. We’d also spend a day exploring the beaches of Malibu, Venice, and Santa Monica, and dive into the vibrant nightlife scene by visiting bars and restaurants. One thing I love about LA is that there is always something new to see, whether it’s a hidden gem restaurant, an art exhibit, or a trendy neighborhood to explore. It’s all about blending outdoor adventures with iconic LA experiences and discovering the city’s endless surprises.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d like to dedicate my shoutout to my parents. They’ve always been my biggest supporters, believing in my dreams every step of the way. Their love and encouragement have been the foundation of my journey, shaping who I am today.
