Meet Rachel Burnstein | Artist & Designer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Rachel Burnstein and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Rachel, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
Before Bad Glass, career wise, I was working to build up other people’s businesses or brands. That work experience, since the age of 15, was a mixture of positive and negative but ultimately made me realize I wanted to shift my energy into building up myself. So when I became more comfortable in the stained glass medium and more comfortable sharing my work online, it felt like a no brainer to pursue an artistic career on my terms.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
It’s only recently that I’ve been able to be full time at Bad Glass. For most of the last 5 years, I’ve had other work to supplement my income along with making mirrors. I think that’s an important thing to be transparent about. I also think it’s something you can’t let hold you back from getting started. It’s of course a huge challenge to balance work life with a new creative work life but at the same time, for me, it was a valuable cushion to help support myself while following my passion. If you are interested in starting something, just start.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’ve got a list on my phone of places to take visiting folks – especially food.
If I had a buddy for a week, let’s say it’s Summer, we’d have a beach day in Malibu and get fried shrimp at Malibu Seafood. for lunch. Another day we’d float in the water after a long hike at The Bridge to Nowhere. We’d walk around Sierra Madre and grab beers at RT. We’d definitely crash a hotel pool and relax. We’d eat all the dumplings, burritos, and sushi. Columbo’s martini’s. Hammer museum. Griffith park. Dancing. Deb’s pond. Scoot around Chinatown. One week is not enough.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I have to thank two people that helped give me the confidence to try something new without fear. The first one is Amy Poehler and her book, Yes Please. That book inspired me to get out of my comfort zone more than I was expecting it to. And secondly was my therapist at the time. I explained my burnout from working 3 jobs and my desire to get back to art. She suggested I take some classes – pressure free and to keep an eye out for inspiration! So simple and yet so effective.
