Meet Chewei Chang | Audio Engineer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Chewei Chang and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Chewei, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
When I was young, my brother introduced me to BB King, Jon Bon Jovi, and Linkin Park CDs. This launched my passion and utmost interest for music. Because of this experience, I began to learn guitar when I was fifteen years old and started playing in an alternative rock band. When my band was creating our first record, I realized my passion was actually for sound, recording, and post production. I want to help artists by improving their sound, elevating them to the next level, and allowing them to tell their story to the best quality possible. At the time, I struggled to find a place to learn, even interning in a studio was difficult in Taiwan. This led me to pursue an education, and ultimately a career in sound engineering in America.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Being an audio engineer is very subjective. The most difficult part of being an engineer is finding the best way to make a song sound great. This entails the recording, the mixing, and mastering. There are many ways to make a song sound good, but there are many minor details in the production to elevate a song to greatness. Every artist, and song requires a different plan to achieve the best result. Most of the time, artists aren’t sure what they want, and it’s our job to provide them with the best recording and mixing options. What sets me apart from other engineers is my patience and dedication for creating music. For every session I work on, I strive to make the music unique, and the best it can be. Every session or song I work on, I consider it to be a piece of my own art. I hope every piece of art I create is unique and perfect.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I believe the best spot in LA is the beach. I always have fun at Venice Beach, there’s so many activities to do there. My favorite bar / venue in Venice is the Townhouse. I love to walk around the Venice Boardwalk, and then catch show at the Townhouse or other venues in the area. I also love the nature in the city, specifically the hiking trails. I really like exploring in the Angeles National Forest. I love to hike and enjoy a scenic view of the forest or city. I also love hiking at Griffith Observatory, there is an amazing view of the entire city at the top.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
First of all, I’d like to thank my parents for allowing me to pursue my dream. They’ve provided me unconditional love and support during my entire journey. I also want to dedicate a shoutout to my mentor Adam Kagan. Adam gave me the guidance to advance my career, and how to integrate into the LA culture. Adam’s guidance led me to an internship with my next mentor: Tom Weir, the owner of Studio City Sound.
Tom gave me a lot of opportunity to work on a variety of recording projects. He’s one of the kindest and generous people I’ve met. Working with Tom helped build my musical connections and network that I have today.
