Meet Maria Sarobeiki Ortiz | Taino Crochet artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Maria Sarobeiki Ortiz and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Maria Sarobeiki, can you talk to us a bit about the social impact of your business?
My business helps in spreading our Taino culture and knowledge. The “My heritage “ doll collection was created in order for us to introduce our culture to the younger generation. The representation that I try hard to incorporate into my work is very important to me and our community. Since we come in all shades and tones . I make cultural dolls that represent all in different varieties.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Hi 👋 my name is Maria Sarobeiki Ortiz, I’m a Taino freehand fiber artist that specializes in cultural dolls . My pride is in all my work that is related to my heritage . I make dolls that represent us all , those that have Taino Boricua bloodline , and those Puerto Ricans that have other mixes . I make dolls of different skin tones , hair color and textures since as Puerto Rican people we come in all colors . Even as. Taino we are not a monolith and that’s what I strive to represent with my work. I’ve been crocheting for over 8 years now , after my first year I had so many people wanting something made by me that I decided to make a line of dolls that were affordable and also have a story to them . I’ve learned along the way that not everyone is on your side , I’ve had to face some challenges in certain people that will oppose you no matter what . I’ve taken it all and made it a positive in my life, by doing what I love to do and also getting a chance to show people that we are still here, the Taino are not extinct .

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My shoutout would be to my community elders that are always willing to teach and embrace us with knowledge and care . To one of my favorite teachers and mentors , Elena “Cucubanoaru” Marrero that was one of my inspirations into getting more creative . To Shihan “Warixi” Candy Soto , who’s always willing to teach and embrace you with Taino spirituality . And of course to all of my family, friends and community supports that help me in spreading my art .
