We had the good fortune of connecting with Jiahui (Amy) Yu and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jiahui (Amy), do you have any habits that you feel contribute to your effectiveness?
I think the most important habit is to plan the time wisely.

I always plan ahead and have a clear list about what I’ve been doing and what I’ll be doing, especially when there’s a lot of projects going at the same time. There’s a small blackboard which records my daily and weekly schedule, and I’ll mark them on while getting finished.

Also, I need to have a long-term goal plan, that can help you to move step by step and to feel the improvement each day.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am grateful to my family and friends who have supported me along the way. The one thing I do not regret is choosing to be a composer. My own musical expression aims to bring happiness and joy to people. I like to start my writing with beautiful melodic lines with memory points and ear candy. There may not be so many complicated techniques, but I always believe that a good melody can make a perfect integration of people’s emotions and music.

When I was in high school, I wrote an award show song for the school’s award ceremony, and it was played for four years. It’s the first piece I’ve actually created since I started learning computer music. At that time, I really felt the happiness that people get from my music. When listening to the music created by the alumni for the school, people’s heart is filled with excitement and pride. I have always been very grateful to the school for giving me this opportunity to create value for the school. Since then, I have really established my determination to become a contemporary artist. It has also become my goal to bring happiness and joy to people.

In addition, while my sister was pregnant, I composed a fetal education music for the baby. I knew she’d been anxious during the pregnancy, so I wrote her a very calm, relaxing piano piece. She was very happy after receiving this special gift, which relieved her pent-up mood to some extent. When she told me it was really helpful to her, I felt very relieved. I believe that when an artist can help others around him or herself, he or she has made the first step on the long road to the ultimate goal. If every artist can help the people around him, I believe the world will be better than it is now. Achieving their own goals is important, but helping others will also bring them closer to the ultimate goal. Give a rose, the hand has lingering fragrance. In the future, I will make more efforts to help people around me in need with my own strength. I wish artists can unite together to create a better future for human beings.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If it’s a one week trip, I’ll definitely bring her to visit my college – Frost school of Music in University of Miami first. There are many talented musicians and there are great concerts almost every day. I believe that no one wants to miss a great audio-visual feast.

The south beach in Miami have a wonderful scenery. we’ll visit the Brickell city center first and enjoy the sunlight at the beach after the shopping.

Florida has a lot of great places to visit! For the rest of the holidays, I’ll take her to visit Keywest and Tampa. There are a lot of amazing food, like stone crabs and lobsters! I’m sure my friend will enjoy it a lot.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I am especially grateful to my boyfriend for his 3-year support of my career. We were both working in the music industry, he was a drummer/mixing engineer and I was a composer/producer. Our cooperation is very tacit understanding and we can complement each other perfectly.

Before I met him, I was extremely weak in percussion writing. He led me in and taught me a lot about percussion writing skills. He also influenced my musical style, from the limited orchestral and pop music writing, to a versatile musician who can create from rock, fusion, jazz, world percussion and many other aspects.

At the same time, he provides a great deal of emotional value during my busy work. When I am frustrated, he is always the first to stand up and encourage me and affirm me. When I felt confused about my choice, he always encouraged me to make my own choice firmly.
