We had the good fortune of connecting with Michael Zislis and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Michael, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Born and raised in Southern California, I have always been fascinated by the food and beverage world. When I was only 13 years old I brewed my first beer for a science experiment at school. By the time I was an economics major at the University of Southern California, I was a master brewer. Possessing an insatiable entrepreneurial spirit, I opened a brewery fabrication company and started building breweries all over the world. I then started opening restaurants and hotels concepts including Rock’N Fish, The Strand House, Brewco, Rock & Brews, The Brews Hall, Shade Hotels and more.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Independently owned and operated in Manhattan Beach, Zislis Group and its diverse portfolio of hotel, restaurant and brewery brands have defined elevated coastal-inspired hospitality. We are excited to be on the forefront for creating a new model for the hospitality industry that provides a top notch hospitality with world class food and beverage programs. With a keen eye for innovation and quality, we have established a notable presence in the dining and hotel sectors, creating experiences that are both luxurious and welcoming. My properties reflect a deep passion for providing exceptional service and culinary excellence.
I am also deeply committed to giving back to the community and believe that giving back is a key ingredient to my success. Supporting my community who supports me. Throughout our ever changing economy and world, I have learned to be flexible and build a team of creative, innovative problem solvers that all have the same goal as I do.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Manhattan Beach is the best place in the world. I would start us with brunch at Shade Hotel Manhattan Beach’s restaurant zinc (I love our avocado toast!) After relaxing on our rooftop pool we would walk downtown to grab a Navy Grog cocktail at Rock’N Fish before hitting the beach. For dinner I would reserve us a window table at The Strand House so we could watch the sunset before heading in to the city to listen to some live music.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My journey to success is indebted to the unwavering support of my family, dedicated team, and visionary group of investors. Their steadfast belief in both myself and my ideas fuels my determination, inspiring me to continue to grow and make our businesses the best they can be.
