Meet Gee Green | Owner at GeeFit Training Club

We had the good fortune of connecting with Gee Green and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Gee, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
Over time, my perspective on work-life balance has evolved significantly, shaped by the dynamic interplay between my career as a personal trainer and my pursuits as a musician. Initially, finding equilibrium between these two passions posed a challenge, as each demanded a substantial investment of time and energy.
During my early years, the scales often tipped in favor of one endeavor over the other, depending on the demands of the moment. Balancing late-night gigs and writing with early morning training sessions required careful planning and prioritization, yet it also instilled in me a deep appreciation for the importance of balance in sustaining long-term well-being.
As I matured professionally, I began to recognize the symbiotic relationship between my two passions, viewing fitness and music not as competing interests but as complementary facets of a holistic lifestyle. Embracing this perspective allowed me to integrate my work and personal pursuits more seamlessly, cultivating a sense of harmony and fulfillment.
Today, my focus stays on prioritizing self-care, setting boundaries, and remaining attuned to my own needs, I continue to evolve my approach to work-life balance, seeking harmony amidst the ever-changing rhythms of life.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
GeeFit Training Club emerged from a humble concept scribbled on a napkin. With over two decades of experience as a personal trainer across various gyms in the Chicago area, I eventually transitioned into independent training, blending my passion for fitness with my artistic pursuits as a musician. As one half of the renowned group Mass Hysteria, I spent my days honing both my physical and musical craft, embodying a 50-50 split between athleticism and artistry since childhood.
Growing up, sports were ingrained in my DNA, beginning with baseball at the age of six and continuing through high school with a mix of baseball and basketball. Yet, my musical roots ran deep, thanks to my father, the esteemed singer Garland Green, whose talent shaped my artistic journey, complemented by my mother’s love for the arts and poetry.
However, amidst the whirlwind of touring and performances, I found myself neglecting my health, gaining 50 pounds along the way. It wasn’t until 2018, when I started a bodybuilding competition journey, clinching first place and igniting a viral response on social media. The flood of inquiries for guidance highlighted a glaring gap—I lacked a dedicated space to support others on their fitness journeys.
Determined to bridge this gap, GeeFit Training Club was born, preceded by GeeFit Online—a platform for virtual training. Over a year and a half of meticulous planning led to the realization of my dream facility in Chicago’s esteemed South Loop neighborhood. However, just as momentum picked up, the unforeseen hurdle of the 2020 pandemic threatened to derail everything.
Faced with the daunting decision to halt or persevere, I drew strength from the belief that now, more than ever, people needed guidance to bolster their health. Embracing this conviction, I decided to move ahead, signing the commercial lease and committing to my vision despite the uncertain climate. It was during this tumultuous time that one of my online clients, Sarah Pihl, stood out. Witnessing firsthand the remarkable results she achieved through our virtual training, Sarah not only believed in my vision but also decided to come aboard as a business partner, adding another layer of strength and commitment to GeeFit Training Club’s journey.
Four years later, GeeFit Training Club stands as a testament to resilience and dedication, transforming countless lives through holistic wellness practices. My journey underscores the importance of perseverance, even in the face of adversity. Today, I am proud to lead a thriving community of individuals committed to prioritizing their health and well-being, a testament to the transformative power of following one’s dreams.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Chicago has a great live music scene. Go see a show at one of the smaller venues. I recommend Empty Bottle, the music box theater (classic turn of the century stage turned movie theater). Reggies Rock Club and Subterranean.
The federal reserve’s money museum. You can see what $1m looks like in different denominations, old confederate money, etc. It’s tiny but unique.
The ancient Egyptian temple at the field museum. This is a real temple moved stone by stone to Chicago.
the Renaissance Society art gallery in Hyde Park.
My favorite restaurant Frontera Grill. (Authentic Mexican Cuisine/Owned by Rick Bayliss) My big brother Richard James is executive chef there. So I get the hook up!
You can’t come to Chicago without having some Harold’s chicken, Garrets popcorn and Giordano’s deep dish pizza. Honorable mention to Cafe Salonica in Hydepark. The best pesto chicken wraps ever!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
