Meet Hanxiao Zhou | Graphic Designer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Hanxiao Zhou and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Hanxiao, any advice for those thinking about whether to keep going or to give up?
As a designer who values flexibility and expression, rather than extensively drafting, I frequently dive straight into the creative process, allowing ideas to organically evolve. My work files resemble divergent mind maps, containing a multitude of exploratory paths from which I discern the direction that resonates most with my creative instincts. While the final product may differ from the initial concept, each iteration contributes to the refinement of my design language and expression. Persistent exploration leads to truly worthwhile outcomes.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
In my design practice, I frequently incorporate elements of traditional Chinese culture and motifs inspired by nature. I view it as my responsibility to disseminate the richness of these cultural treasures to a global audience. A hallmark of my work is the integration of bilingual or multilingual design elements within a single layout, facilitating broader accessibility and understanding of the content I seek to convey.
One of my projects, “Taste of Chinese New Year,” explores the culinary traditions of various regions in China through a publication showcasing the distinctive dishes served during the New Year’s Eve feast. Many individuals, even within China, may not be fully aware of the diverse culinary customs across different regions. Through meticulously illustrated depictions of each dish and engaging print layouts, I aim to enlighten audiences about these cultural nuances.

My designs often draw inspiration from traditional cultural motifs and structures. For example, my 2024 calendar design, inspired by the Twelve Flower Goddesses of China, employs gradient graphics derived from each flower’s unique characteristics. The soft, evolving colors convey a sense of optimism for the new year while celebrating the aesthetic beauty inherent in cultural heritage.

I frequently explore themes of flora and fauna in my work. For example, “Imperfectly,” a project aimed at promoting body positivity, utilizes microscopic imagery of pressed flowers to emphasize the beauty found in their imperfections. The transparency of the images, installed on glass, as the light shines through, highlights the details and texture of the flowers’ wounds. By showcasing the intricacies and unique qualities of each flower, I seek to challenge societal norms of beauty and encourage viewers to embrace their individuality.
My design philosophy prioritized the bridging of cultural divides, promoting inclusivity, and fostering appreciation for the natural world. These concepts inform my work as I strive to inspire audiences to embrace diversity, celebrate uniqueness, and cultivate a deeper connection to the world around them.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’ve always believed that food serves as a gateway to understanding a region’s culture and crafting a well-curated list of eateries is often my first step in planning an unforgettable trip, whether for myself or a friend. For a week-long excursion in Baltimore, I’d kick off the first day mornings with a visit to Cafe Dear Leon for their freshly baked goods, followed by a leisurely stroll along the waterfront at Canton Waterfront Park, eventually making our way northwest towards Fell’s Point, where we can indulge in delights from my favorite pastry shop, SACRÉ SUCRÉ. Baltimore boasts many historical neighborhoods filled with colorful rowhomes and cobblestone streets that I wouldn’t want my friend to miss. This itinerary promises a delightful blend of good food, sunshine, interesting neighborhoods, and picturesque views of seagulls and ducks along the inner harbor. This itinerary promises to deliver tasty treats and provide a delightful blend of sunshine, and picturesque views of seagulls and ducks along the harbor, as well as an introduction to the many things Baltimore has to offer.

Baltimore boasts many attractions catering to various interests. Baseball enthusiasts can catch a game at Oriole Park at Camden Yards, while those intrigued by nature and marine life can explore the wonders of the National Aquarium. For creative artists, The Walters Art Museum, the Baltimore Museum of Art, and the American Visionary Museum offer a rich tapestry of artistic experiences spanning diverse genres and eras.
I hope my friend will relish the diverse offerings of Baltimore during our week-long adventure, immersing themselves in its vibrant culture and storied history.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I attribute a significant portion of my journey and growth to the vibrant community at Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA). Opting for the Graphic Design program at MICA for both my BFA and MFA degrees shaped my trajectory in the design field. The collaborative and supportive studio environment fostered within the MICA community allows me to reimagine my approach to design and serves as a guiding force in shaping my creative path from its inception.
Throughout my years at MICA, I’ve forged invaluable connections with peers who have become my closest friends and mentors who have profoundly influenced my artistic vision. Their unwavering patience and support have ensured that I never felt alone or overwhelmed, even in the face of challenges. The MICA community has been more than just an educational institution; it has provided a nurturing and inspiring ecosystem that continues to fuel my passion for design.
