We had the good fortune of connecting with Jocelyn Chin and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jocelyn, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
One of the best decisions I made for my businesses was not being afraid to take risks, but only if I believed in myself enough to remain consistent and follow through with them. When I launched Picnic and Chill, I had little to no experience in event planning. However, my passion for it and my determination to succeed was very strong. I challenged myself to continuously improve by acquiring new skills, expanding services for clients, and embracing the risks necessary to make it all happen. My belief is that without taking a risk or a chance on your idea, you’ll never truly know its potential for success. The uncertainty of not knowing should fuel your curiosity enough to pursue it. However, it’s crucial to thoroughly evaluate risks and weigh the pros and cons. Consider the magnitude of the risk and whether you’d be prepared if things didn’t go as planned. Having a contingency plan is essential, but if the benefits outweigh the drawbacks, I believe it’s worth pursuing. One of the key pieces of advice I’d offer to aspiring entrepreneurs is to avoid holding themselves back from trying new things, say yes to everything. Take everything as a opportunity to learn. It’s important to understand that entrepreneurship often involves encountering failure and hardship, and navigating these challenges can be a significant learning experience!
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
It has been so rewarding to see my ideas and dreams come to life. So many nights of imagining, dreaming, and painting a picture. It has been so exciting to see clients enjoy our picnics, customers loving the drinks, or moms loving the balloon for their kids birthday party. All of this was imagined in my head and seeing it process in real life is crazy. But, this journey has not been all glitz and glamour. We have face so many challenges, lots of tears have been shed, and countless late nights of hard work. When I started I was only 24, with so much to learn. Of course there are so many mistakes that have been made and regret, but I also believe that I had to go through these obstacles for a reason and I always try to look at the mistake as a learning curve.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If I were to be showing a friend around in LA I would take them to the following:
1) Sunday Melson Trading Post on Sundays in Fairfax
2) The Grove Mall for Dinner
3) Santa Monica Beach
4) Tacos at Avenue 26 ( MUST TRY!)
5) Disneyland!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would say my family has been a huge impact with my successes. When I started Picnic and Chill, both my business partners and I’s dad and grandpa really stepped in to help us with building the picnic tables and backdrops or just anything we imagined. Our moms, siblings, and cousins also stepped in to help us when we had no one. which we appreciate alot and couldnt have done this without them. What really helped me is that my parents will always support any of my crazy ideas I have and takes the time to give me their thoughts, but at the end of the day they always tell me to try it. Besides my family, surrounding yourself with people that are extremely motivated in their careers or goals also helps. Being in an environment where everyone wants to push themselves to success, and you are able to talk about it with each other was a great environment for me to be. A huge shoutout to my friends and family that has been with me since the beginning because without their motivation and support it would be hard.
