Meet Juanny Romero | CEO Mothership Coffee

We had the good fortune of connecting with Juanny Romero and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Juanny, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
The cornerstone of my success and our brand’s success is the dual mission to transform women’s lives at both ends of the coffee supply chain—from the women coffee producers to the women who are our customers.
This vision is deeply intertwined with every decision and strategy at Mothership Coffee. It starts with our commitment to sourcing coffee from female-led cooperatives worldwide. This supports women producers by providing them with fair wages and a sustainable livelihood and empowers them to take on leadership roles in their communities. By elevating these women, we help foster environments where women’s contributions are valued, and their economic independence is secured.
On the customer side, we create spaces and experiences that resonate deeply with women. Our cafes are more than just places to get coffee; they are vibrant community hubs where women feel welcomed, safe, and valued. We host events, workshops, and talks that engage topics important to women, from entrepreneurship to wellness, creating a platform for empowerment, education, and connection.
The transformation of these women’s lives, both producers and consumers, fuels the ongoing success and growth of Mothership Coffee. It is a vision that not only enhances our business but also creates a ripple effect of positive change across communities and continents. This dual focus on empowerment is the heartbeat of Mothership Coffee, defining who we are and driving everything we do.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Mothership Coffee isn’t just a coffee company; it’s a movement centered around community, empowerment, and sustainability. What sets us apart is our dedication not only to serving exceptional coffee but to making a meaningful impact on the lives of female coffee producers and every customer who walks through our doors. We are committed to ethical sourcing, partnering with female-led cooperatives worldwide, and ensuring that every purchase supports women’s economic empowerment and sustainable farming practices.
I’m particularly proud of how we’ve created community hubs through our cafes. Each location is more than a place to grab a coffee—it’s a space where people come together to connect, share stories, and support one another. We host events and workshops that foster personal growth and community engagement, making each cafe visit an enriching experience.
Getting to where we are today was far from easy. We faced the typical challenges of any small business—capital constraints, market competition, and the 2008 economic recession, to name a few. However, the more significant challenges were aligning our business practices with our ethical standards and scaling those practices as we grew. Every challenge was a learning opportunity that forced us to innovate and adapt. Our growth has been a testament to the resilience and dedication of our team, who believe deeply in our mission and values.
One key lesson I’ve learned is the importance of community. Whether it’s the community of our employees, customers, or global partners, nurturing these relationships has been crucial to our success. Another lesson is the power of staying true to our values. In a world where businesses often compromise on their values for short-term gains, we’ve found that integrity and consistency in our mission have strengthened our brand and deepened our customer relationships.
I want the world to know that Mothership Coffee is more than a coffee brand. We are a platform for change, championing women’s empowerment, community support, and environmental sustainability. Our story is about transforming the coffee industry one cup at a time, ensuring every sip represents a step towards a more equitable and sustainable world. We invite everyone to join us on this journey – to experience the joy and connection a simple cup of coffee can bring to themselves, their community, and beyond.
