Meet Skylar “SCKY REI” Reed | Illustrator/Creative Director/Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Skylar “SCKY REI” Reed and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Skylar “SCKY REI”, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
My thought process about starting my own business in multi media comes from a lack of opportunity and the drive to create for myself because I’m not necessarily a top candidate for corporate America. My little criminal record forced me to create an away for myself to provide for family which is a benefit because I have no choice but to freelance and provide for my family in that way. It’s been a great learning experience and forced me to sharpen my skills as a freelancer.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
It was an uphill battle trying to take an idea and elevate it to the next level. I’ve been illustrating since I was very young and took those skills and values into my personal works translating it to creative works for others all around the world.
Some of my challenges was sharing that my cover art for personal projects and other businesses were created by me and didn’t realize how powerful being multifaceted really meant. It’s like I wanted to keep its mystery but learned later on it was my super power and I could help others with my skill set wishing I learned earlier that I could capitalize on creative directing for others.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Well I’m based in Saint Louis, Mo and my favorite places would include Ganadara a Korean restaurant that I adore and the food is simply amazing then I would take them botanical gardens following with a visit to the art museum. I’d add in a concert of Jordan Ward to top it all off.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d like to give a shout to my mother Danita Carroll for installing courage into my heart and my wife Anu Reed (ANUQN) and my daughter Nora as well as my mentor Adedayo Kosoko for giving me the tools to succeed in my craft
