Meet Dr. Christina Soibatian | Clinical & Community Psychologist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Dr. Christina Soibatian and we’ve shared our conversation below.
*Dr. Soibatian is a Clinical Psychologist at West Los Angeles VA Medical Center and a Clinical Assistant Professor at UCLA’s David Geffen School of Medicine. She runs a small private practice and contributes as a Wellness Leader for a nonprofit organization called The Local Wellness Foundation. She recently wrote a grant awarded by California Mental Health Services Authority to provide holistic and evidence-based mental health practices to community members of East Los Angeles in honor of Mental Health Awareness Month.
Hi Dr. Christina, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
Growing up in Los Angeles as the daughter of Armenian immigrants, I was deeply influenced by my family’s migration story and the resilience they demonstrated in the face of adversity. From an early age, I learned about the trauma my grandparents endured during the Armenian Genocide and my parents struggles with acculturation in the U.S. They instilled in me the importance of preserving our cultural identity and language, values that continue to guide me in my work with diverse populations as a clinical and community psychologist.
Intergenerational trauma, stemming from the experiences of my ancestors, has also played a significant role in shaping my understanding of mental health and resilience. Witnessing how trauma can be transmitted across generations has deepened my commitment to supporting individuals and communities in overcoming the lingering effects of historical trauma.
A pivotal moment in my upbringing came on my seventh birthday when my father introduced me to ice skating. Despite our financial constraints, he dedicated himself to coaching me, instilling in me a sense of self-belief and resilience that continues to shape my approach to life and therapy with my clients. His unwavering support taught me the importance of recognizing strengths and overcoming obstacles, lessons I now impart to my clients as they navigate their own challenges.
Unfortunately, my father passed away just three years later, leaving my family to grapple with internal and external pressures. Yet, amidst the hardships, the strength of family became a guiding force in my life. As I took on roles like interpreting for my mother during medical visits, I realized the importance of building trust and advocating for those in need—a principle that drives my clinical practice today.
As a clinical and community psychologist, I am dedicated to understanding and addressing the complex interplay of individual and societal factors that impact mental health. In addition to providing therapy and support to individuals dealing with mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, and trauma, I also focus on broader community issues, including improving access to mental health care, promoting mental health awareness, and addressing social determinants of mental well-being by working with community organizations.
Reflecting on my upbringing, I am reminded of the resilience, compassion, and determination that have shaped who I am as a psychologist. My experiences and training have not only fueled my passion for helping others but have also equipped me with the empathy and insight needed to support my clients on their journey to healing and empowerment. Through my work, I strive to promote mental health and help individuals and communities lead happier, healthier lives.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My career as a clinical and community psychologist has been a journey fueled by passion, resilience, and a deep commitment to making a positive impact in the lives of others. What sets me apart is my dedication to culturally informed, trauma-informed, and evidence-based practices, as well as my focus on empowering individuals and communities to overcome adversity and thrive.
One aspect of my work that I am particularly proud of is my research and advocacy efforts in the field of trauma, specifically intimate partner violence, sexual assault, and post war exposure. Through my studies and clinical practice, I strive to develop innovative interventions that address the complex needs of survivors and promote healing and resilience.
My path to where I am today has been far from easy. Like many in the field, I faced challenges along the way, from navigating rigorous academic programs to overcoming personal and professional obstacles. However, I believe that it is through facing and overcoming these challenges that we grow and evolve as individuals and professionals.
One of the most important lessons I’ve learned along the way is the importance of resilience and perseverance. In moments of doubt or difficulty, I’ve drawn strength from my personal experiences, my family’s resilience, and the unwavering support of mentors and friends. I’ve learned to embrace setbacks as opportunities for growth and to remain steadfast in my commitment to my values and goals.
Ultimately, what I want the world to know about me is that I am deeply passionate about promoting mental health and well-being for individuals and communities. I believe in the power of human connection, empathy, and empowerment to create positive change, and I am dedicated to using my skills and expertise to make a difference in the lives of others.
My story is one of resilience, compassion, and determination, and I hope to inspire others to embrace their own journeys with courage and hope. Through my work, I aim to foster healing and empowerment, and to create a world where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
For a well-rounded experience exploring greater Los Angeles, I’d aim for a blend of culinary delights and active adventures. We’d kick off our journey in my hometown of Whittier, starting the day with a rejuvenating yoga class at Heart and Soul Yoga. Afterward, we’d treat ourselves to a delicious lunch at Phlight, indulging in tapas while taking a leisurely stroll through the historic charm of uptown Whittier. Next, we’d immerse ourselves in my Armenian heritage with a day in Glendale. We’d spend the morning shopping at Americana and then indulge in the rich flavors of traditional Armenian cuisine at Carousel Restaurant or my mom’s house where her cooking reigns supreme. No visit to LA would be complete without a day at the beach, so we’d head to Malibu to soak up the sun and swim. Afterward, we’d rent bikes and explore the iconic landmarks of Santa Monica Pier and Venice Beach. To experience LA’s nightlife, we’d venture to Elephante for trendy vibes and then head to Hollywood for a fun comedy show at the Laugh Factory. For a taste of the city’s artistic scene, we’d spend a day exploring the downtown arts district. We’d start with a visit to a local brewery, followed by a fancy meal at Bestia or Manuela. Finally, to reconnect with nature, we’d embark on a hike in Griffith Park, followed by a delicious brunch at Dune in Atwater Village. We’d take a leisurely stroll through the trendy neighborhood, savoring good coffee and planning our next adventure.
