We had the good fortune of connecting with Amanda Liu and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Amanda, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
Growing up in China, my passion for art and creativity started at a young age. From early on, I enjoyed drawing and creating, which laid the foundation for my journey into graphic design. This childhood interest shaped my educational path and ultimately influenced who I am today.

My undergraduate major in art at UCSB provided me with a comprehensive understanding of artistic principles, including color theory, composition, and various mediums. This academic experience broadened my artistic horizons and refined my technical skills. It also introduced me to the theoretical aspects of art and design, helping me grasp the significance of visual communication.

Transitioning into an MFA program at Otis College of Art and Design specifically for graphic design was transformative. This graduate-level study immersed me in the world of design theory, typography, branding, and user experience. It was here that I honed my ability to solve complex visual problems and communicate ideas effectively through design.

The impact of my background and upbringing is profound. Growing up in China, I was exposed to rich cultural traditions and a deep appreciation for aesthetics. This cultural influence informs my design choices, often integrating elements from traditional Chinese art into contemporary graphic design.

Moreover, my cross-cultural experiences—transitioning from China to studying and working in the United States—have broadened my perspective. This exposure to diverse artistic styles and design philosophies has enriched my creative approach, enabling me to create work that resonates across different cultural contexts.

Overall, my background has instilled in me a strong work ethic, attention to detail, and a passion for merging creativity with functionality. It has also fostered in me a desire to continuously learn and adapt—a crucial aspect in the dynamic field of graphic design. My journey from China to the U.S., coupled with my formal education in art and graphic design, has deeply shaped my identity as a designer and continues to inspire my creative endeavors.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My art and design practice is deeply influenced by a fusion of traditional Chinese aesthetics with contemporary graphic design principles. What sets my work apart is the seamless integration of cultural elements, storytelling, and a focus on visual communication that resonates across different audiences.

I take pride in my ability to blend intricate details and symbolism from Chinese art with modern design techniques to create visually compelling and meaningful pieces. This unique approach allows me to offer a fresh perspective and evoke emotions through my designs.

My journey to where I am today professionally has been a challenging yet rewarding path. It certainly wasn’t easy, especially navigating different cultural and educational landscapes from China to the United States. However, I overcame these challenges by maintaining a strong work ethic, staying adaptable, and continuously seeking growth and learning opportunities.

One of the key lessons I’ve learned along the way is the importance of perseverance and resilience in the face of setbacks. Each obstacle I encountered became an opportunity for growth and refinement of my skills. Embracing feedback and constructive criticism has also been instrumental in my development as a designer.

What I want the world to know about me and my brand is that I strive to create designs that not only look aesthetically pleasing but also carry depth and meaning. I want my work to bridge cultures, evoke emotions, and spark conversations. Through my art, I aim to promote cross-cultural understanding and appreciation for the richness of traditional art forms in a contemporary context.

Ultimately, my story is one of passion, dedication, and a commitment to pushing boundaries in design while staying true to my cultural roots. I aspire to continue evolving as a designer, contributing innovative and thought-provoking work to the creative landscape, and inspiring others to embrace the beauty of diversity in art and design.

Imagine embarking on a week-long journey that seamlessly integrates a passion for graphic design with a deep appreciation for the beauty of nature. As a graphic designer inspired by the natural world, I would curate a captivating itinerary to showcase the best of both realms while providing unforgettable experiences for a visiting friend.

Day 1: Arrival and Natural Immersion

Upon arrival, the adventure begins with a serene morning spent at a local café, savoring a delightful breakfast and discussing the exciting days ahead. Energized, we head to a nearby botanical garden or nature reserve. Here, amidst lush greenery and blooming flora, we find inspiration in the intricate patterns and organic forms. Armed with sketchbooks and cameras, we capture the essence of nature, laying the groundwork for future design projects. As evening descends, we indulge in a farm-to-table dining experience, savoring dishes crafted from locally sourced ingredients.

Day 2: Artistic Exploration

The following day unfolds with an exploration of art and culture. We delve into a renowned art museum, where exhibitions blend contemporary artworks with nature-inspired themes. Inspired by these creative displays, we venture outdoors for a scenic hike in a nearby national park. Amid towering trees and sweeping vistas, we absorb the natural beauty, translating the textures and colors into sketches and photographs. The day culminates with a mesmerizing live performance of traditional music or dance, enriching our cultural experience.

Day 3: Coastal Escape

A change of scenery beckons as we venture to the coast. Along the shoreline, we spend the day beachcombing and soaking in the coastal ambiance. The rhythmic crash of waves provides a backdrop for seaside sketching and coastal photography, capturing the interplay of light and water. As the sun sets, we relish a feast of fresh seafood at a beachfront eatery, savoring the flavors of the sea.

Day 4: Design and Urban Exploration

Our itinerary takes an artistic turn with a focus on design and architecture. We tour a local design studio renowned for its eco-friendly projects, gaining insights into sustainable design practices. Next, we explore the city’s vibrant street art scene, marveling at murals that infuse urban spaces with color and creativity. The evening is reserved for a stimulating design talk or workshop, where we engage with local designers and expand our creative horizons.

Day 5: Culinary Delights and Creativity

Midweek brings a culinary adventure infused with creativity. We browse a bustling farmer’s market, selecting fresh ingredients for a hands-on cooking class. Under the guidance of a skilled chef, we learn to prepare a regional dish, blending flavors and textures into a culinary masterpiece. Our efforts culminate in a lively dinner party, sharing our creations with newfound friends.

Day 6: Retreat and Reflection

As the week nears its conclusion, we prioritize relaxation and introspection. A morning yoga session amidst nature rejuvenates body and mind, setting the tone for a day of wellness. We indulge in spa treatments or serene retreat activities, reflecting on the transformative experiences of the week. The evening unfolds with a quiet dinner, where we reminisce about cherished moments and newfound inspirations.

Day 7: Farewell with Nature’s Legacy

On our final day together, we embark on a farewell stroll through a scenic park or botanical garden. Amidst tranquil surroundings, we reflect on the week’s artistic explorations. A heartfelt farewell dinner at a local gem provides closure to our memorable journey. Before parting ways, I present a nature-inspired artwork or personalized design creation as a lasting memento of our shared passion for creativity and the natural world.

In essence, this curated itinerary encapsulates the essence of my artistic journey—a harmonious blend of nature’s wonders and creative expression. Through immersive experiences and meaningful interactions, we celebrate the beauty of design inspired by the world around us, forging connections that transcend borders and cultures. This imaginative week embodies the limitless possibilities that arise when art and nature converge, leaving an indelible mark on the heart and soul.

Their support went beyond mere words—they provided me with the resources and opportunities to explore my creativity. Whether it was enrolling me in art classes, providing art supplies, or simply fostering an environment where creativity was valued, my parents played a crucial role in nurturing my artistic interests.

Their guidance and belief in my abilities gave me the confidence to pursue a degree in art at UCSB and later embark on the challenging yet rewarding journey of obtaining an MFA in graphic design at Otis College of Art and Design. Even during moments of doubt or difficulty, their unwavering faith in me served as a source of motivation and determination.

I owe a significant part of my success and passion for design to my parents, and I am incredibly grateful for their support throughout the years.
