Meet Kippi Leonard | Painter

We had the good fortune of connecting with Kippi Leonard and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kippi, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I have always been creative, starting from childhood. My curiosity was evident early on as I delved into activities like sewing, jewelry making, designing furniture, refashioning clothing, and playing the piano and guitar. However, my artistic journey took a new turn in 2013 when I began drawing, painting and experimenting with various mediums. This exploration provided a unique and tangible way to express my ideas and emotions. It became my journal and I realized this was where I would be able to transform my lifelong passion for creation into a career that I could actively pursue.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My artwork serves as my journal, conveying my emotions not through words but through the intricate layering of materials like house paint, oil paint, desert sand, charcoal, graphite, and cold wax medium. As I make marks and lines, I build a rich color story. In this process, I refine the chaos into a composition that appears subdued on the surface, yet moments of that rich story break through, revealing the deeply resonant narratives hidden beneath.
As an explorer in life, my curiosity and relentless desire to learn constantly propels me forward. My artwork is my visual diary, capturing what I learn and experience. It is in a state of continuous evolution, and I am eager to see how my life experiences will shape new directions or spark new series within my art practice.
Creating a career from scratch is, to say the least, a daunting endeavor. There are always challenges to face. I live by the advice given to me by the first gallerist I worked with: “always keep it about the art.” Whenever I start focusing too much on the career aspects, the quality of the art suffers, and consequently, so does the career. Experience has taught me that by “keeping it about the art,” a successful career naturally follows.
I deeply love painting; it humbles me to delve into the deepest parts of my soul and reveal them to those who may critique or applaud. I cherish the connections that art fosters—with people I have never met, alongside my fellow artist peers. A truly rich life is being painted, and I am here for all of it.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’d kick off our day with a homemade brunch, serving up my signature savory breakfast alongside a perfectly brewed pot of coffee using Trader Joe’s French roast in my Moccamaster machine. Afterward, we’d take a walk through South Palm Springs, admiring the stunning Mid-Century architecture. Our next stop would be The Perez Arts District, where we’d explore my favorite shop, Hedge, before heading over to my studio. Then, I’d introduce you to the vibrant community of my fellow district artists. If time permits, I’d love to take a drive to the Salton Sea for a surreal wander about. The Coachella Valley is brimming with off-the-grid sights and experiences. Finally, dinner in the bar at Mr. Lyons after drinks at Seymour’s Speakeasy.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d like to give my dear husband Greg a shout out. His support has been pivotal in my artistic journey. From the very beginning when I expressed a desire to pursue my passion, he has been by my side—offering his love, countless hours of help, brainstorming ideas, the voice of reason, an embrace when I am overwhelmed, and relentless cheerleading. His encouragement has empowered me to pursue my passion fearlessly and without reservation.
