We had the good fortune of connecting with Lindsay Hurty and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lindsay, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
My career shifted when I became a mom. Parenthood dramatically changes life’s flow, and although I’d been a classroom educator before motherhood, I wanted to be all-in with my babes at home. By the time my third child was born, I was ready to plan my way back into my career, but going back to teaching high school English, which I’d done prior to motherhood, would have required full-time help with my kids. I got the idea to become an entrepreneur and start my own business (which is an online learning platform that primarily supports the midlife mom launch) because it was an avenue to having a career that fit with my desire to be very present with my kids.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Sure! I’m a self development educator, writer and speaker. My vision is to redefine what a lifelong education is, by guiding adults (mostly midlife moms) to take ownership of their self-education. I believe that it’s never too late to launch into your calling. I also believe that parenthood changes us, and midlife calls for a deep inward dive to get to know ourselves (and our values) anew.

I co-founded Everwell – an online life-learning platform + inspiration network for women – and I’ve designed, facilitated or hosted 350+ Everwell programs, including my signature online course, SELF SCHOOL, which guides students to identify their core values, rewires their Inner GPS and design a fulfilling midlife plan. I also recently launched my YouTube channel, ‘Becoming Everwell with Linds’, where I share original stories about everyday experiences that capture the rich textures + fleeting melodies of the midlife symphony.

I’m best known for my use of storytelling and my willingness to be vulnerable, as a way of establishing trust with my audience. I’ve been described by clients as a teacher of the soul and a seed-planter, which moves me very much.

My work isn’t so much ‘easy’ as it is natural for me. I’m called to this work, and I love it. I’ve also got three school-aged kids, who are my priority, so I’ve set up my business so that I’m Mom from 3pm-9pm everyday and on most of the weekend. At some point, my mom-life hours will change, but becoming a mom has always been my life’s greatest dream. So, as I’m living my dream, I don’t want to miss it.

I adore being a present, hands-on mom; to me, parenthood is a profession. And it’s been hard to carve a career path that normalizes this, as so many people categorize moms as either ‘stay-at-home moms’ or ‘working moms’. You ask what I’m most proud of? Well, I’m proud that I self-describe as a calling-empowered mom, and I’ve created a weekly schedule that has clear blocks for mothering and clear blocks for my career calling. I’m proud that I’ve protected my boundaries as a mom.

Aspects of entrepreneurship are super challenging for me: marketing, sales and managing the books, all come to mind. But all businesses have icky parts–that’s reality. I’ve learned that if I want to live my professional dream, I have to accept the ick and just do the work. Eventually, if I want to really flourish in marketing and sales, I will need to hire someone who comes alive in that kind of work.

I want people to know that Everwell is an online home for those looking to live midlife with great intention and meaning, and that I, Lindsay Hurty, am a motivating guide for midlife moms looking to launch anew.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend were coming to town for a week, I’d stock up with a ton of food and we’d likely hunker down and talk for hours on end, snacking all the way! I’d have Scrabble at the ready; we’d go swimming; and we’d take daily long walks down to the public beaches in my town, looking out at the Long Island Sound. We’d picnic! And we’d go to my kids’ events: baseball games and dance performances. (I’m the DJ Mom for my son’s youth baseball team–I sometimes wonder if I missed my actual calling as a ballpark DJ! So my BFF and I would make the perfect playlist together before the game.) We’re a quick train ride from New York City, so we’d surely pop into the City to see a show, maybe walk across the Brooklyn Bridge and explore Brooklyn, definitely getting lost in some bookstores and boutiques, and pause often to drink chai lattes and people-watch.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My confidence and success comes from a deep knowing of how loved and valued I am by my parents. They’re both still hugely present in my life, and they have encouraged me to grow in all the ways I’ve wanted to expand. I will never underestimate the power of a love-rich, stable and supportive childhood and young adulthood. So, HUGE shoutout to my mom and dad for taking their roles in my little life so seriously.
