Meet Steven Bradshaw | Clinical Psychotherapist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Steven Bradshaw and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Steven, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Through a lot of reflection and inner work, I realized that my own problems were shared by many others and that by helping them I could help myself (the classic meta-solution described by Erik Erikson). Agency took root in me. I was not powerless. I could take a stand for human values and set up my own operation within the broader Human Potential Movement. I started building the world I want to live in, starting with myself and my small circle of influence and extending out into the world.

As a manifestation of this process, I started the Beyond Psychology Center to create a container where people could transform their suffering into something valuable and start to build the world they each wanted to live in. Together, we could all heal and form a loose confederacy of people doing rad things.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Beyond Psychology Center stands for a way of being awakened while at the same time being deeply integrated into the world.

Through therapy and coaching, both one-on-one and in groups, we help people to connect to their somatic foundation, where everything good starts. Once we connect up the nervous system, self-regulation, good energy, and wisdom emerge an we can start to build a life that is in alignment with our deep needs. Our work is trauma-informed and deeply embodied. This kind of work goes directly to the root of the issue and can be a lot more accelerated than traditional talk therapy.

I started Beyond Psychology Center because I noticed that therapy is often siloed and lonely and I wanted to be part of a rich and warm community doing good work in the world. I want my own journey to extend beyond the clinical room, into the world in all kinds of magical and outrageous ways. Imagination always jumps the box it starts in. I want to ride my imagination into the wider world.

One group that we do a lot of work with is creative professionals and business executives. “We help the soulful be successful and the successful be soulful.” I think “business as usual” is a frightful state of affairs. Most people sacrifice themselves for an almost complete lack of meaning and business relationships that are toxic and turn on them without warning when business conditions call for it. I want to help business people realize that this way of being is a reflection of trauma and not our full realized and awakened potential.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I live a monkish life where I focus on my work, family and self-care so I don’t do a lot of socializing around the city.

If I get some time, I do enjoy rock climbing and hiking in the Santa Monica mountains.

I would point visitors to take a walk around the Venice canals. It’s fun to see all the different architectures and life ecosystems that have been constructed side-by-side.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My mother. This work that I do is an extension of her energy and approach. It was all there from the beginning. As a university professor, she was a humanitarian powerhouse, helping hundreds of students get set up in the world. She called her network, her web. If you got caught in her web, she would move heaven and earth for you. Unfortunately, she sacrificed herself in the process–the one glitch in her armor.
