We had the good fortune of connecting with Alvin Lee and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alvin, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Before starting my own business as a DJ under the alias ALVYN, I was attending a university and preparing myself to get a corporate 9-5 job, which was something I was told to do all of my life. Music is something that I’ve grown up with my entire life since I grew up playing classical piano and it only made sense that once I discovered DJing in college, that it would be something that I would have no regrets chasing (as long as I’m doing it responsibly and within my means). Fast forward several years later, I’m having the time of my life making memories and meeting people that I’m meant to meet on the way to my dream.
Moral of the story is, if you have something that you’re passionate about, CHASE IT and make sure to put in the work that is required with it!
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I like to think that what makes me unique is that my personality completely matches the music that I put out – my music has a duality of high-energy but also introspective, and many of my friends can attest that I am like that on a personal level as well. This generally surprises people when I first meet them!
Honestly, I have so much more that I want to achieve, but I currently am most proud of the foundation and network of people that I’ve built so far. I’ve met so many high-achieving people who are also SO genuine and I’m so thankful that they take the time to mentor me when they don’t need to, especially in an industry that is so cutthroat (shoutout Abhi Mehta, Julian Chow, Daniel Hong, Shawn Nguyen, Martin Nguyen to name a few).
As someone who is still working a corporate job, the tough part is finding the time to balance the 9-5 while putting in the time for music, whether it’s producing, DJing shows, networking, etc. It is a constant battle finding a balance, but I want the world to know that at the end of the day, all of this is a learning experience and it’s times of pressure that builds the most character and makes you the best person that you can be. I do my best to view this journey optimistically, and I hope that anyone that meets me sees that I genuinely exude this mentality!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
As a club rat and foodie, I would pack the itinerary with spots for each meal, dessert, and then somewhere to go out at night.
Please don’t judge me, I’ve only been in LA for a year 😂 but an example of an ideal day for me would be to explore Santa Monica, eat at Belle’s Beach House, and walk around the 3rd st. promenade area. For dinner, Chubby Cattle (delectable AYCE A5 wagyu), get dessert in K-Town, and go to Academy/Exchange/Hollywood for the nightlife.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
The two main forces that have completely changed the course of my music career for the better are We Dream Worlds and Better Than One Collective (BTO Collective). Through both of these entities, I’ve met lifelong friends who are all also on their way to chasing their dreams. We Dream Worlds and CEO, Abhi Mehta, have done nothing but wonders by managing me and always finding opportunities for me, and BTO Collective has and continues to be a support group of DJs/producers alike that are taking the EDM world by storm. Without these two organizations, I absolutely wouldn’t be where I am today.
