Meet Ilona Shtanko | Fashion Merchandiser & Business Management

We had the good fortune of connecting with Ilona Shtanko and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ilona, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
I’m Ilona Shtanko, and I’m thrilled to share my journey with you. Growing up in the beautiful city of Saint Petersburg, Russia, and the third generation of a Deaf family. I fell head over heels for fashion at a young age. Despite facing challenges as a Deaf person in a society with its fair share of barriers, I pushed my way into the world of style, dreaming of a career in fashion.

But life had more in store for me than just fashion. Alongside my love of fashion, I discovered a passion for track and field. In 2013, I proudly represented Russia at the Deaflympics Games in Sofia, Bulgaria, where I won bronze medals in both the high jump and pole vault events.

While athletic success was thrilling, my heart remained strongly set on fashion. I was driven by a desire to challenge stereotypes and make out a space for Deaf individuals in the fashion industry.

Today, I’m on a mission to prove that Deaf people belong in the world of fashion. My challenges have motivated me to inspire others to pursue their dreams and anything is possible where you want to pursue your passion in career, no matter the challenges.

In 2014, I made the life-changing decision to move to America in pursuit of my fashion dream. I enrolled at Orange Coast College, where I studied fashion merchandising. Graduating from their program was a significant milestone for me. Additionally, I expanded my expertise by completing a Fashion Business Management program at the prestigious Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) in Manhattan, New York. Both institutions offered invaluable experiences, empowering me with the knowledge and skills essential for my journey in the fashion world.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My fashion journey has been diverse and valuable, with each role contributing to my growth and understanding of the industry. From serving as a Visual Merchandising Intern at Love Shack Fancy in New York City to a Compliance Intern at Volcom in Costa Mesa, CA, each experience has been a stepping stone in my career journey. At Beach Candy Swimwear in Costa Mesa, CA, I unleashed my creativity as a Content Creator Specialist Intern, while my tenure at Billabong in Huntington Beach, CA, provided insights into product development. Additionally, my time as a Showroom Intern at Sydney/The Vetiver Collection in Costa Mesa, CA, exposed me to brand styles and look book formats.

Also, I’ve had the privilege of volunteering at various fashion shows, including the Christopher John Rogers Runway Show at New York Fashion Week in Spring 2023, the CONCEPT KOREA Runway Show at New York Fashion Week in Winter 2023, and the Saks Fifth Avenue Fashion Show in Newport Beach, CA, in Summer 2022, allowing me to contribute to the industry while refining my skills and passion for fashion.

Currently, I’m pursuing my bachelor’s degree at California State University, Long Beach (CSULB), with my sights set on landing my dream job in the fashion industry. My fashion journey isn’t limited by my deafness; instead, it nourishes my drive to inspire others. I want to be a source of possibility, proving that anyone can achieve their goals and pursue their dream career, no matter the challenges they may face. Through my journey, I hope to empower others to break barriers and chase their passions fearlessly.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I love California because it offers an incredible diversity of experiences. In one state, you can explore the lively city of Los Angeles, with its vibrant culture and endless activities. You can also head to serene beaches like Malibu or Laguna Beach. You can take a trip into the desert, exploring Joshua Tree’s unique landscapes. The mountains are also within reach, with Big Bear offering snowboarding, skiing, hiking, and breathtaking views. This combination of city, desert, beach, and mountain experiences makes California a truly unique and exciting place to visit.

To kick off your Los Angeles adventure, visit The Getty Villa in Malibu. Marvel at its stunning views and ancient art collection before heading to Malibu Surfrider Beach to watch surfers in action. For a laid-back lunch, Neptune’s Net offers classic seafood delights. As the day winds down, take a leisurely stroll along Santa Monica’s Third Street Promenade or enjoy the attractions on the pier, topped off with a refreshing hard kombucha at JuneShine.

The following day, join in on a treasure hunt at the iconic Rose Bowl Flea Market. Discover unique items, draw inspiration from diverse fashion styles, and immerse yourself in the lively atmosphere. Afterward, explore Los Feliz, walk through quirky shops, and indulge in legendary tacos at HomeState, catering to both vegans and meat lovers.

Take a trip into the artistic realm with a visit to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA). Admire its extensive art collections and iconic installations like Urban Light, offering insights into diverse cultures and historical periods.

For a day of exploration and discovery, hike up to Griffith Observatory. Take a look at panoramic views of the cityscape, explore into the mysteries of space and science through interactive exhibits, then descend to Hollywood Boulevard. Walk the famed Walk of Fame, and visit the iconic TCL Chinese Theatre.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to give a big shoutout to my amazing family, supportive boyfriend, and wonderful friends who have been my rock throughout my journey. I also want to thank my mentors, teachers, and educational institutions like Orange Coast College, Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT), and California State University Long Beach (CSULB) for equipping me with the knowledge and skills I needed to succeed. Lastly, I’m grateful to all the friends, colleagues, and fellow fashion enthusiasts who have been there for me, sharing their passion and camaraderie along the way. Each of these individuals, groups, and organizations has played a crucial role in shaping my path, and I’m truly thankful for their support and guidance.
