Meet Candias Smith | Jewelry Artist, Designer & Curator

We had the good fortune of connecting with Candias Smith and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Candias, why did you pursue a creative career?
The artistic career chose me!
I tried the 9-5 it didn’t work for me. I needed to feel fulfilled and I can only achieve such a feeling when I am being creative. I chose jewelry this time around because it’s so beautiful, cherished and timeless.
. I want my clients to feel whole and valued when wearing my pieces which is how I feel creating it and once I have completed a piece of jewelry.
This is my contribution to the world.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Iris 1956 is owned by Candias a native of New Orleans.
Our pièces are handcrafted using the ancient lost wax casting process and techniques. We use recycled metals to create our pieces. We are a woman owned brand.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
When in New Orleans you must eat and dance !
Our first stop will be Irene’s Cuisine in the French Quarter’s followed by a walk up royal street and a stop at the Carousel 🎠 Bar for a late night drink. After rest and brunch the next stop would be Alma Cafe in the Bywater area followed by a local shopping and vintage spree at Freedom Apothecary, Freda, Anthology, Merchant House, UAL, and Funky Monkey.
After a day of shopping and long walks the very next day we would visit the museums NOMA, OGDEN and Studio Be!
For dancing and jazz we shall experience Snug Harbor, Preservation Hall and Tippitina’s + Ace Hotel.
I also recommend a walk along the river during sunset! New Orleans had the most beautiful sunset!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My New Orleans Community has really supported Iris 1956 for years. The company really took off in 2020 during Covid. The drive to keep going came from the support from the 15 percent pledge community as well as the arts council in New Orleans which assisted me with my residency this was our first taste to having a brick and mortar location. We are so grateful for the grant we received a grant from visa I fund women which allowed us to stay afloat!
My biggest supporters are biopic and supporters of women owned businesses. We make an effort to share clients! We recommend and refer each other’s services! I appreciate the love so much it means a lot.
My mother who is my rock ! she would give me the world if she had it. That’s why we homage her with naming the brand after her – Iris is her middle name and she was born in 1956!
