Meet Shala Nyx | Actor

We had the good fortune of connecting with Shala Nyx and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Shala, why did you pursue a creative career?
It’s about having the freedom to play for me! I love the creative expression of acting and it was about having all of the fun that comes with creating a character and storytelling. With my living room as my stage as a child, I’d entertain our family and friends by acting out our favourite television shows and impersonating the greats, I loved making people laugh, it was a dream come true that I could actually pursue this career path professionally! I was very lucky to have started training and working professionally at age 8 so early on I found these incredibly heart warming and inclusive communities where we were able to work together on the craft. It is also about engagement for me now, how can I captivate and move people, how can I best evoke empathy.

Please tell us more about your career. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
The age old sentiment springs to mind…. is anything easy worth having…. my creative path was definitely not an easy one, there have been so many thrilling challenges along the way! I faced a lot of rejection before any breakthroughs and that is the nature of the biz. My friends and I laugh, “oh you have to mad to persue this career”. Another wise friend says, “yes, and it takes a bit of madness”, and I loved that and use that theory often! For me the craft of acting and producing is a very holistic experience, I am creating something, breathing life into it, summoning my body, mind, spirit and soul with each creation, giving it my full power and attention. Resilience, robustness, humour, flexibility and recovery are all very useful key elements to remind myself to maintain, to rise to any challenges and continue to show up for what I believe in the most.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Point Dume in Malibu is definitely one of my favourite spots. Im a big nature lover, this place is breath taking and there is such a rich history of this Native American land, which attracts surfers and film buffs alike!
El Coyote on Beverly Boulevard is cool, you can feel like you’re on a Tarantino set, while sampling the taco menu!
Yamshiro is stunning at night! Beautiful views across the city and delicious sushi menu!
Hauser and Wirth, Downtown LA, is great for some artistic inspiration!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Huge shout out’s to my maman!
