Meet Jingyao Huang | Visual Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Jingyao Huang and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jingyao, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking.
Becoming an artist is an endless adventure in itself. Immersing in art creation brings great joy, but financial and life challenges inevitably follow, which are necessary experiences for a full-time artist I think. Every profession involves risks, but I believe that art is resilient. By staying true to my passion and maintaining balance, I can manage and accept these risks. Whenever I am in need, mutual support with friends who share similar situations helps me persevere in my creative journey. Taking risks is an essential path for an artist; creation itself is an endless adventure.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My artistic practice is based on photography and extends to collages, installations, and site-specific projects. The uniqueness of my work lies in redefining and reinterpreting everyday photographic works through a semiotic analysis perspective. This approach allows me to explore the significance of time and memory within living spaces. I materialize fragments of current memories from the realm of consciousness into physical space, with each installation and sculpture acting like a memory card. This process delves into the meaning and value of personal identity and responds to changes in the surrounding environment. Additionally, my work demonstrates a profound awareness of contemporary issues and conveys my creative perspectives through various media.
I am proud of discovering how to interpret everyday photography in my own language, deeply exploring the interaction between individuals and their environment. In my work, I reconstruct the puzzle of memory in material space, prompting viewers to reflect on self-awareness and the world around them.
Becoming a full-time artist has been a fortunate journey. Along the way, I faced numerous challenges, from finding my unique voice in the fields of photography and art to mastering the integration of various artistic techniques and media. Overcoming these challenges required perseverance, continuous learning, and the courage to experiment and occasionally fail. One key lesson I’ve learned is to stay true to my vision while remaining open to new ideas and feedback. This balance has been crucial for my artistic growth.
I want the world to know that my work reflects my personal journey and my deep interest in the relationships between memory, identity, and environment. My work and story are not just about creating art; they are about fostering a deeper understanding of ourselves and the spaces we inhabit. Through my art, I hope to inspire others to explore how their own memories and identities are influenced by history, the surrounding environment, and society, and to appreciate the ever-changing world in this context.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
