We had the good fortune of connecting with DJ Furth and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi DJ, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Somewhat calculated risks are essential to creating anything fresh or really just anything worth making. If something feels too safe then I generally interpret that as being something not worth pursuing. All of the best work I’ve made was a direct result of listening to some inner inclination and following it despite it being real risky.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I make films and visual art that speaks to me and captures a sense of the world as it is, or as it could be, which I hope both entertains and makes people feel somehow heightened or elevated.

I’m most proud of the things I have made and am preparing to make which don’t neatly fit into any existing categories and so feel genuinely fresh.

I’ve learned to trust my process deeply and balance not overthinking or self-censoring with being open to being wrong and critically revising and accepting others’ opinions without excess ego.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d be nothing without my parents and would certainly not be doing what I’m doing at the level I’m doing it at without my life partner Shreni Shukla.
