We had the good fortune of connecting with Tony Granberry and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tony, what is the most important factor behind your success?
The most important factor is perseverance. Second most important, patience. With anything that grows, there is a process. Must persevere and have patience for any seed to grow.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My main business is called AJG Mobile Car Wash. (I also run a small media production company and an online men’s boutique.) We provide the luxury of a professional car wash at whatever location you desire. Since I use cordless equipment, as well as corded equipment, I’m often able to get into the small spaces that the bigger fish cannot.

I’ve been working for myself for 3 years, when I quit my job as Drive Test Examiner at the Department of Motor Vehicles in Inglewood and took the faith-based plunge to control my own destiny. The first 1.5 years was turmoil and conflict. It took quite a toll on my mental and emotional health. But it also pushed me through something I like to call a “life filter.” Those filters show you who you are at your core. I unknowingly laid the foundation for today by not giving up on myself nor running when the waves got choppy. The road to entrepreneurship is likely one of the most difficult journeys I’ve ever made. And I have 15 years sobriety from alcohol, so I’m well-versed in difficult travels.

I’ve learned many lessons over the last 3 years, but the most beneficial and relatable one would be the importance of believing in one’s self. I learned this at a later stage in life, but if humanity as a whole truly believed in themselves from childhood, the world would be an awesome place.

As any business owner will tell you, challenges are plentiful. The key to overcoming them is to know they’re there, but to keep going regardless. For example, let’s say you MUST walk up a steep hill to get to a destination. The easiest way to get over said hill is to focus on the destination. The journey is just the travel necessary to get where you’re going. One’s focus should always be the goal. When a QB executes a play, it’s to get to the goal. The play is just a suggestion on the best way to get there, but your ability to bend, flex, and adapt to the current situation is HOW you actually do it.

I stopped drinking 15 years ago. I had mild cirrhosis, infections in my lungs, heart, blood, and intestines, Upon entrance into the hospital, I was admitted to ICU and spent quite some time there before moving into a room, to be nursed back to health. The night I arrived, I asked the doctor if I was going to be okay. I’ll never forget his response: “I’ll do the best that I can, Mr. Granberry.” I knew that when I left, I had to dedicate as much energy to my new self as I did to all that Hennessey, Seagrams, and tall cans of 211 beer. While some may regret these types episodes of their own lives, I’m appreciative of mine, because without that test, there would be no testimony.

And by God’s grace, the testifying will continue.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
At this point, I don’t get out much. It’s basically work and home, but I’d tell them to check out Labarca and Eddie V’s. Mexican food and seafood, respectively.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to shout out all the people that stood by me and continue to offer their friendship and support. Not enough to list, but too many to name.
