We had the good fortune of connecting with Dimitra Kationi and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dimitra, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
Art, in my opinion, is more a way of living rather than a career status. In most cases it is not a choice but the only viable scenario for an artistic being. My journey through art started from the early ages, my commitment, though, took its time. It was not until I had been working as a lawyer for some time, that I realised I could not exist outside of an artistic environment.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a musician by profession, writer of three poetry books and have also studied and practised the law. I think of myself as the least courageous of all people, but when thinking back, I realise there have been some courageous moments of mine so far. Giving up one profession, at the age of 26, daring to innovate in my music teaching and believing that my writing, my poems, would probably have something to say to others too, are some of these rare moments of boldness. I should say it takes guts to believe in your gut feeling. But it is worthwhile.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
The place I live in is Thessaloniki, Greece. I love giving friends a tour of the city, it’s Byzantine monuments, dating back to the 5th century, Byzantine churches like Osios David (saint David) or Nikolaos Orfanos (Saint Nikolaos of the orphans) are excellent examples that would excite art and history lovers. Thessaloniki also sets a high standards for gastronomy. The Greek tapas, called “mezè”, most of them memoirs of a blended Turkish, Armenian, Hebrew and Greek history are there for visitors and locals to cherish.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
The books I have read determine the way and extend of my thought. My friends, their love and their thumbs up provided warmth and depth to my heart.
