We had the good fortune of connecting with Jeanine Hattas Wilson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jeanine, what do you attribute your success to?
The most important factor behind my success and the success of my team is the willingness to say yes to difficult challenges, combined with the willingness to learn how to do them well. It’s not enough to simply say yes to something new, and then fumble through it poorly. And it’s not enough to simply educate yourself, but never take chances. It requires the courage to try something new, plus the dedication and open-mindedness to research and educate yourself in all things to get better and better and better.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I grew up loving art, and was encouraged to practice all my life. However, with two parents in sales, I also gravitated toward sales jobs during school, and studied both painting and advertising in college. This balance of art and business gave me an advantage when starting Hattas Studios. I was able to produce the art, market and sell the art, and eventually grow the business to have a staff of 10+ full-time artists. I am so grateful to be able to provide stable jobs to artists. And because I believe in education, every quarter I bring in educators to teach my team about a wide-variety of topics to challenge them and keep them well-rounded. Some of these workshops are art-related. But others have been about financing, marketing, networking, sales and operations. I believe it’s important for all artists to study business to some degree. After all, you can be the most talented painter in the world. But without marketing, no one will ever see your work.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Here are some places I’d bring out-of-town friends visiting Los Angeles:

Since we are in Hollywood, I’d be remiss not taking them to a studio tour, such as a tour at Warner Brothers, Paramount or Sony.

And since we are by the beach, I would make sure their feet touch the sand … probably at Zuma Beach, in Malibu.

If they’re into hiking, a morning at Runyon Canyon would be fun. And maybe a bike ride down Venice Beach for fresh air and fun people-watching.

I love checking out comedy shows, so I’d grab tickets to the Comedy Store, Hollywood Improv, Laugh Factory or Largo. And I really love the magic/variety show at Black Rabbit Rose.

If they like art, we’d probably hit the Getty, LACMA or Norton Simon Museum. Or hop around smaller galleries in West Hollywood or the Arts District.

A day of wine-tasting in Malibu is so relaxing, so I’d take them to places like Malibu Wines, Cornell and Rosenthal.

For a unique dining experience, I’d take them to Opaque, where you dine in total darkness. Or Clifton’s Republic for the quirky and over-the-top atmosphere.

For a nice meal, I’d choose the DTLA rooftop at Perch, or Middle Eastern food at Babel, or the outdoor patio at Girl & the Goat downtown.

And for more casual dining, I’d pick Toi on Sunset for great Thai, or Cole’s for a French Dip … a Los Angeles classic.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I am eternally grateful to my parents, who have always encouraged my artistic pursuits. My mother is an artist, and always shared her knowledge, and kept my twin sister and me in art courses since we were little kids. I am also thankful to my twin Julie for drawing and painting with me almost every day growing up.
