We had the good fortune of connecting with Justin Jackson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Justin, do you have some perspective or insight you can share with us on the question of when someone should give up versus when they should keep going?
It’s basically blind trust you have to put in yourself. It’s investing in yourself knowing there’s no guarantee you’ll be successful in what you do. There’s a question you have to ask yourself though, wouldn’t it be worse to try and fail than to never try and continue living with regret. I think this realization drives you to push until you see results.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I approach photo shoots no matter what light conditions currently surround me. Since I shoot on film part of the fun in it for me is seeing how differently photos look depending on lighting conditions and positions. Shooting on film has been described as a chemical miracle because every roll will come out different. I’d like to think of my style of shooting as very adaptable, and I think that makes my work stand out. I learned overtime that keeping the process fun and not obsessing over details can help creativity flow and success eventually come.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If I had someone visiting and wanted to take them somewhere special it would be south of LA. First to Torrance to Bonello’s for some of the best pizza I’ve found in the city, then to Palos Verdes to enjoy the cliff views and tranquil energy of the area. The rest of the week would be filled going to the lakes near big bear, hitting the bars in downtown Long Beach, and having brunch at Breakfast Republic.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d have to shoutout every person who’s shown support. Everyone who’s saw something unique or special about one of my photos and encouraged me to continue learning even in times when I’ve felt unmotivated to do so. These compliments move me more than people even know.
