We had the good fortune of connecting with Heather Morrow and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Heather, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I have always been a creative soul and wanting to bring beauty into the world. Over the years, this creativity has evolved and changed. When I started oil painting in my mid-30s, my parents commented that they always thought I had talent. I asked why they hadn’t encouraged it; however, they had. They had given me all sorts of creative experiences and when I was old enough to decide on my own to pursue theatre, they let me spread my wings and fly.
Almost 20 years ago, the oil painting led to me taking a class in ceramics and PotteryDaily.com was born. I discovered my passion for porcelain and eventually converted my garage into a home studio, so I could “throw my life away.”
Going back to the beginning, when I became interested in photography, my parents bought me a camera and patiently developed roll after roll of film. In high school, I took a photography class and learned how to process my own black and white images.
Just before the pandemic, I became interested in Infrared Photography. I was looking for photos that could be successfully transferred onto ceramics and I had a hunch using this technology would be something that others were not doing. I took a class and had the opportunity to use a new mirrorless camera. I became fascinated with everything the camera could do and went down the rabbit hole taking class after class, learning all sorts of photography techniques. Last year I started sharing my photos through my new website www.heathercmorrowphotography.com.
I do believe that every creative endeavor feeds the next. The skills you learn in one, feed into the others. I am not sure where this will all lead; however, I know that I have to continue to create using whatever medium I can.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
For the past 3 years, I have participated in a photo project class through the Creative Photo Academy in Torrance. It is a year-long program, and you start with an idea and start making pictures to build out a portfolio or story. The first year, I titled my project “Little Pricks” and then spent the year taking very close up photos of cacti. Last year my project was “Just Flowers” inspired by Georgia O’Keefe’s intimate style. This year I am putting together objects to create Still Lifes. I picked this to hone my staging and lighting skills. Each of these projects has taught me to keep going. Sometimes things are messy in the middle; however, the end result is worth it. Keep taking the shots!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If someone was visiting, top on my list would be Huntington Museum and Gardens. All year round there is something to see and the green beans in the Chinese Garden restaurant are worth the trip. Since we have a week, we could do brunch at Marston’s and then visit Descanso Gardens or the LA Arboretum.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to give a shout out to my parents who have always been so supportive of all my endeavors. My Dad passed away at the beginning of the pandemic from congestive heart failure; however, I still feel him with me cheering me on as I follow my North Star.
