We had the good fortune of connecting with Aoran Ma and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Aoran, let’s start by talking about what inspires you?
As a graphic designer with a diverse cultural background, I draw inspiration from the rich tapestry of human stories, including my own. The cultural reflections on visuals fascinate me, as they provide a deep well of inspiration that I incorporate into my work. Modern artworks also play a significant role in shaping my creative process, offering fresh perspectives and innovative techniques that I blend with traditional cultural elements to create unique and compelling designs.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My journey into graphic design is deeply rooted in my family, particularly my father, who is an architect in China. Growing up, I often found myself pushing back against following in his footsteps. I think I had this rebellious streak, wanting to carve out my own path and identity. But when I started my studies at the Maryland Institute College of Art and earned my BFA in 2021, I discovered a genuine passion for graphic design.

During my time at MICA, I immersed myself in various aspects of graphic design, from branding strategy and publication design to motion graphics and more. Each project was an opportunity to explore and refine my skills. After graduating, I felt the urge to push my creative boundaries even further, so I decided to move to the West Coast and join the prestigious MFA program at ArtCenter College of Design. This move marked a significant turning point in my career.

Completing the MFA program at ArtCenter was a transformative experience. It not only deepened my understanding of graphic design but also encouraged me to experiment with new ideas and technologies. I began to see graphic design not just as a profession but as a powerful medium for storytelling and expression.

One of the most exciting discoveries during my MFA journey was my passion for blending imagination, fantasy, and futurism into my designs. I began exploring cutting-edge AI technologies and generative codes, pushing the conventional boundaries of design. This exploration allowed me to create work that is not only visually striking but also innovative and forward-thinking.

What truly sets my work apart is the influence of my diverse identities. As an immigrant with a rich cultural background, a queer individual, and someone deeply enthusiastic about American counter-cultures, my designs are a reflection of these multifaceted experiences. Every design decision I make is infused with these aspects of my life, making my work unique and deeply personal. I see myself as an artist who uses graphic design as a means of expression, rather than just a job title.

Reaching this point in my career hasn’t been without its challenges. There were moments of doubt, obstacles to overcome, and a constant need to prove myself. However, these challenges taught me valuable lessons in resilience, adaptability, and the importance of staying true to my vision. Each setback was a lesson in disguise, helping me grow both personally and professionally.

One of the key lessons I’ve learned along the way is the importance of embracing one’s unique story. Our backgrounds, identities, and experiences are what make us stand out. They are not just parts of our past but essential elements that shape our creative voice. By embracing my story and incorporating it into my work, I’ve been able to create designs that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also meaningful and impactful.

Now that I’ve completed my MFA program, I am incredibly excited about the possibilities that lie ahead. I am eager to continue pushing the boundaries of graphic design, blending traditional techniques with modern technologies, and telling stories that resonate with diverse audiences. I want the world to know that my work is a reflection of my journey, my identities, and my passions. It’s a testament to the power of staying true to oneself and using art as a means of connection and expression.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend were visiting Los Angeles, I’d take them on a journey that reflects my cultural background and diverse interests. We’d start our culinary adventure at Colette Pasadena, a gem of a restaurant offering creative Asian cuisine with a Cantonese base. Its inviting ambiance and delicious menu make it the perfect spot for any occasion, whether it’s a casual lunch or a special dinner.

For a taste of Thailand in LA, Luv2eat Thai Bistro would be our next stop. This classic Thai eatery is known for its familiar favorites served in a modern dining room setting. It’s a great place to enjoy traditional Thai dishes prepared with authentic flavors.

In Highland Park, Joy is a must-visit for its casual, neighborhood vibe and authentic Taiwanese cooking. From minced pork on rice to thousand-layer pancake, Joy brings the flavors of Taiwan’s street food culture to LA. It’s a place where you can feel at home while enjoying delicious food that tells a story of heritage and tradition.

As we explore the city, a visit to the Getty Center would be on our itinerary. This cultural hub not only offers breathtaking views of Los Angeles but also houses an impressive collection of art, beautiful gardens, and thought-provoking exhibitions. It’s a perfect blend of art, architecture, and nature.

For a taste of Hollywood history and entertainment, a stroll along the Hollywood Walk of Fame and a visit to the TCL Chinese Theatre would be essential. These iconic landmarks are symbols of the city’s rich cinematic heritage and provide plenty of opportunities for star-gazing and exploring Hollywood’s glamorous past.

A day at Malibu’s beaches would offer us a chance to relax and enjoy the stunning coastal scenery. Whether we’re soaking up the sun on the sandy shores or taking a leisurely stroll along the beach, Malibu’s beaches provide a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle of the city.

In the evening, we’d head to Yamashiro Hollywood for dinner. This historic Japanese restaurant offers not only delicious food but also panoramic views of the city. It’s a magical setting to enjoy a meal while watching the sunset over Los Angeles.

Throughout our week-long adventure, we’d also make time to explore the city’s diverse neighborhoods, from the trendy shops and cafes of Abbot Kinney in Venice Beach to the vibrant arts scene in downtown LA’s Arts District. Los Angeles is a city of hidden gems, and I’d want to show my friend the best of what it has to offer—delicious food, stunning art, and unforgettable experiences that showcase the diversity and vibrancy of this dynamic city.
