We had the good fortune of connecting with Spencer Falls and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Spencer, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
It wasn’t much of a thought process behind the beginning of my business to be honest. I didn’t in fact know that I was starting a business when I pulled my VW van up on Abbot Kinney, and started slinging flowers from the side of it. It was really just a laugh, and ultimately, the best joke I ever indulged in.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
For probably more than 10 years which is much longer than I’ve been a florist, my mantra has been. “I am one with the creative power that sustains all life”. With this mantra floating through my subconscious, I’ve been able to take a creative approach to every aspect in life, and think of life itself as a work of art. This has led me down, some very incredible paths. Paths, that I would not have made my way down if I had not given the unknown a chance to reveal itself… This idea takes the pressure off myself to manifest, my creative visions, feeling as though it is a collaboration between myself and this “creative power”. It keeps me grateful for the moment, and excited for the moments to come.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
So my friend gets off his flight and pulls into LAX. I pick him up in my VW van and we go straight to the local jazz club call Sam first, which is a stones throw from LAX. From there we get back to Venice Beach, my stomping ground and favorite neighborhood and all of LA. Here we go and have a meal at great White underneath the Venice sign. It’s kind of hilarious that after all these years being under the Venice, son hasn’t lost its charm to me as an ex pat. Chances are at this point he’s about to pass out because he’s on New Zealand time so we’d stay close probably just crash at my place if we were to stay at a hotel there we probably stay at the viceroy. It’s in Santa Monica, it’s close and Honestly Main St, Santa Monica is starting to pop off so there’s plenty of opportunity to socialize and check things out on that street. Now for the rest of his time here, we’d cruise all over, making sure that he saw the sites at the Getty Center, we’d hit up LACMA on Friday afternoon and enjoy the jazz they put on, we’d be sure to catch a show at the Hollywood Bowl, make our way out to Atwater Village to eat at Dune, hit up a comedy show on Melrose Ave… That’s as much as I care plan and I can imagine they’ll be a lot of filler in the experience that would be born out of the moment.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Oh man, there are so many influences, and so many people to thank for the success of The Unlikely Florist. Firstly, I have to think the community of Venice for the support over the years. They are encouragement in the early days selling flowers from my van, the consistent support through Covid, and just the inspiration of the community has been fundamental and not only the development of The Unlikely Florist, but also the development of myself. And then, of course, have to take my friends family as they support me on a more intimate level advising me when I need perspective and supporting me when I’m in difficult times. They are the wind in my sails.
