We had the good fortune of connecting with Liz Zagone and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Liz, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I’ve always been very artistic. Growing up I loved to paint, draw, sculpt, act in plays, make homemade music videos, etc. As I got older my focus went from creative expression to “fitting in” and being social. It wasn’t until my late 20’s I got started in stand up comedy, which reignited my creative spark. I dabbled for my first couple years but realized if I wanted to get better and get booked, I would have to dedicate more time to it. I had been working restaurant jobs and figured I had nothing to lose if I pursue a career in entertainment. I still work a restaurant job, but flex my creative muscles by creating content from my bartending experiences and co-produce a storytelling show called “Bitch n Purge” which allows service industry workers to “get things off their chest”.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
The project I’m most proud of and excited for is definitely “Womb Room”. A comedic TV series based on events from my own life. In my comedy, I often talk about personal experiences because that’s what I know-and when it comes to observational comedy I’ve always been scared of subconsciously stealing someone else’s joke. “Womb Room” is near and dear to my heart, based off the experiences I had moving in with my witch doctor, woo-woo sister. It’s as heartwarming as it is funny. The process of writing the pilot allowed me to work through very real feelings and taking vulnerable conversations, adding in jokes, was a healing process in itself!

I don’t think anything about the entertainment industry is easy (unless you’re a nepo baby). I think the only way to overcome the challenges is to trust that the hard work will pay off. Everyone has their own path and even though it’s REALLY hard, you can’t compare yourself to others or it will send you into a downward spiral you’ll never get out of. I trust that I’m on the right path and everything that is meant for me, is coming my way. (Can you tell my woo woo sister rubbed off on me?)

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I run into this problem every time I have a friend stay with me. I guess I would legally be required to take them for a hike, maybe not Runyon-too crowded for my taste. A tour of my favorite coffee shops. A trip to the beach-preferably at an off time so there’s not too many people. Dinner at the restaurant where I work, (there’s no celeb experience better than an off work employee coming in to act like a normal patron). Drinks at a bar that’s not too busy-have I mentioned I don’t like crowds?

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I have so many people to shout out! My family is incredibly supportive. My mom is my biggest fan and making her laugh is my favorite thing in the entire world. I love when my family comes to see me perform comedy. They are good sports whether they are the butt of the joke or have to listen to me tell R rated stories. My sister let me live with her for my first 2 years in LA which was hilarious, healing, and the inspiration for a current project called “Womb Room” – a comedic TV series I co-wrote with my friend Kelsie McDonald. A big shout out to Kelsie for her inspiration, support, and believing in me. Additionally, I’d like to shout out my partner who encourages my creativity in every way-even if it’s embroidering past my bedtime.
