Meet Grace Ng | Screenwriter

We had the good fortune of connecting with Grace Ng and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Grace, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I’ve always been very conscious of how words, stories, and media can shape how someone sees the world. In this sense, people who make art and media have a social responsibility to make sure the content they produce benefits others in some way – whether by creating awareness, inspiring perseverance, or simply spreading joy.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m a screenwriter from Singapore who started out writing soap opera. My most prominent credit is as staff writer and co-story editor on the 854-episode daily drama KIN (2018-2021) by Mediacorp Studios. I just graduated from the University of Southern California’s School of Cinematic Arts with an MFA in Writing for Screen and Television, and would currently love to work in TV here in either soap or sci-fi — which are two genres that I believe are more connected than you’d think!

I won the Jack Nicholson Scholarship in Writing at USC for 2023-2024, and I most recently made the semifinals in the Humanitas Prize College Screenwriting Awards 2024 for both Drama and Comedy. I’m really proud of that last one, because I think all good writing has a mixture of both humor and pathos. My writing both contemplates and celebrates the myriad ways people live and find self-acceptance in their lives.

Moving to America is challenging, and I would encourage anyone doing so to find their tribe and build a support system. Also, immigrants often feel like they’re on a time limit to succeed, which is so difficult in Hollywood — there’s no easy solution to this, but I’ve instead learned to have patience while finding other ways to bide my time and sustain myself.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Louders in Koreatown is a must-have. The food and vibe are both immaculate 🙂 Other than that, Seasons Kitchen in Anaheim is an amazing place for Malaysians and Singaporeans to get some sorely-missed local food. So far, Sunright Tea Studio has been my favorite boba chain, especially with its oat milk options!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Emily Duke (https://www.emilydukecomedy.com/all-about-e) is my wonderful USC ex-classmate (we graduated in May) who reminded me that in these unimaginable times, writers and artists are still important because people need joy to keep fighting 🙂
