We had the good fortune of connecting with Joy Pate, LCSW and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Joy, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I had a specific vision to create a mental health practice that provided therapy and wellness services to Millennial BIPOC women where they could feel safe, seen and validated as they journey toward healing. I wanted to be able to be expansive and creative with the services I provided without being limited by the red tape that comes from working for someone else. Having my own business has given me the autonomy to make the impact that I want to, unapologetically, with those I want to make it with.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Therapy With Joy is a mental health private practice offering adult individual and group therapy for BIPOC women dealing with anxiety, self-esteem issues and challenges with life transitions. After six years as a therapist in Non-Profit Community Mental Health spaces, I opened my private practice in 2021, hoping to make a more concentrated impact on the mental health and wellness of people who look like me. Becoming a full-time entrepreneur was never something I th, and while it has presented many challenges, the importance of remaining anchored in my “why” has been this biggest lesson and key element to my success.

Therapy is advancing in accessibility and becoming less stigmatized, yet there is still much work to do. I’m passionate about my services and the core values of my business contributing to that progress by focusing on providing quality, impactful experiences for people who are not always at the forefront of being considered. My practice is rooted in the belief that everyone has the capacity for growth, healing, and transformation when provided with a compassionate and supportive environment. I’m honored to witness and support their healing journey and to help them bloom into their highest self.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Los Angeles is filled with so many small businesses that are the heart and soul of what makes LA great. I would suggest picking up a new read from bookstores like Reparations Club, Malik Books and The Salt Eaters Bookshop. You can also grab a cup of coffee at shops like Sip & Sonder, Hilltop Coffee + Kitchen and South LA Cafe before visiting a local museum like CAAM. If you’re looking to move your body, The Tree Yoga Cooperative, Black Being and Walkgood have you covered.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to shoutout Bianca Shehata, founder of Mind Your Mentor, a consultancy firm dedicated to youth development. Mind Your Mentor provides a transformative mentorship curriculum and trainings centered on mindfulness, personal growth, and professional development. With over 20 years of experience in social services and law enforcement, Bianca aims to strengthen the capacities of youth service providers, ensuring robust support systems for youth and families across diverse demographics and communities.
