We had the good fortune of connecting with Geremy Dingle and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Geremy, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
Fate was instrumental in leading me to the theater as a child. It was an escape from my elementary school environment where I was bullied and outcast to the point of contemplating suicide. On stage, I was accepted as a hyper-quirky kid who tended to express myself with vocal sound effects and a positive zeitgeist of characters. Performing began as a salvation that literally saved my life, and it evolved into my dedicated profession before my 18th birthday.
Destiny has kept me on course over the decades that have passed since.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My art as a performer is in a word: diverse. I’ve often flown with the artistic breeze in the way a painter may decide what medium to use and which subject to capture. Part actor, part musician, part comedian, part writer, part vocalist… I chose to not be encumbered by just one discipline within the realm of artistic expression. My goal was to participate and learn from as many as possible, as you never know what may evolve into a career. I’ve been fortunate to have done a bit of everything as an entertainer and have been blessed to have worked with an array of talented performers from the uber-famous to the completely obscure. This rich tapestry of experience allows me to bring so much to whatever I produce or am cast in next. And as you asked, one thing that sets me apart as a performer is as a vocalist. A “vocal acrobat” is how I’ve come to describe it, and I’ve produced many live shows and musical albums as such. In a nutshell, I croon tunes in a variety of familiar voices and utilize my skill as a vocal instrumentalist by voicing dozens of practical instruments within the song. This is not something that was taught in school, and to be honest I’ve not seen anyone do it to the extent I do, but it has become something of a signature.
It’s not easy, it’s a calling. How I got to where I am is by many years of unrelenting effort and by not being afraid to step back and take breaks. Failure is what you make of it. I’ve been ubiquitously chewed up and spit out by Hollywood, and fame and fortune seem more glamorous than they actually are. My advice to young artists having a go at it is… avoid putting too much value in attaining a level of notoriety and wealth that only touches a fraction of those doing it. It’s a lottery of chance really, with huge advantages going to those who are fast-tracked in through nepotism. Rather than try to control what’s out of reach, be yourself, be bold and brave, and focus on the process rather than a predetermined result.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
A broad question… the itinerary would depend on what my guest of honor wants to see. It’s possible to find practically anything to do in and around L.A. but mapping out a funderful week involves determining the best days and times to drive from place to place. Traffic, as many people know, is the absolute bane of the city. Thus, when spinning someone dear around greater Los Angeles, I strive to avoid spoiling the destinations by having to endure commuter hell to get there. So, whether we cruise through the beach towns hitting the sand and surf or check out the local museums and tourist spots or head toward the mountains or desert really comes down to whomever I’m entertaining. As for eateries, there is a massive array of offerings to choose from. My preference is to continuously try new places and support local establishments over corporate strongholds when it comes to dining. I’ve found Yelp and the like to be very useful when it comes to sussing out destinations with the most potential.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My mother, without a doubt, was the most consistently loving and supportive adult person throughout my formative years. She’s a professional writer, and it’s a cinch that I inherited some of my creativity from her. As I’ve rarely had the opportunity to give her a shoutout in a public forum, now seems an ideal time.
