We had the good fortune of connecting with Chancelle (Chance) Mafoua and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Chancelle (Chance), can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I decided to start my own business because I wanted to live a life by design free from financial stressors that allowed me to take care of my family and travel more. I knew I was not going to achieve this by working a regular job. I’ve always had an entrepreneurial spirit, even as a child but it took me a long time to figure out the right path that fit me as an individual. I’ve never been one that was into the 9-5 culture. It did not fit who I was as an artist, a creative thinker and a free spirit. Because of this I wound up in the freelance world working contract jobs in an industry that I loved, but was very unstable. Freelancing is very difficult and there are times you are out of work for months at a time. This really hindered me from enjoying life as every dollar I earned would be used to pay bills and anything I had left over (which wasn’t much), would be saved for the rainy days when I would be out of work for long periods of time. I wanted to get out of this vicious cycle of working just to survive.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I love when I get to serve others by utilizing my passions and skills. For years, I bounced around trying different business ideas before figuring out how to turn my passion into profits. And although I had many failures along the way, I am most proud of my ambition and continuous drive, that forced me to get up and keep going after each failure. It definitely wasn’t easy for me as I had a lot of mental and emotional baggage that was weighing me down, including past traumas that I allowed to interfere with my growth and progress. I was also financially unstable and didn’t have the support of my immediate family, who kept pushing me to get a “regular” job. I could not bring myself to work a dead end job that sucked the soul out of me, so I had to really rely on myself and push past the negative. Thankfully I eventually found support through my mentor and coach. I really had to invest in myself and shift my mindset in order to experience personal growth, which then began to manifest into my business. It was actually through the process of ghostwriting a book for my mentor that I realized my calling. It’s funny because it was not the first time that I’ve helped others with books, ideas and brands, but it was the first time I realized I could actually turn it into a viable business. I finally found something that allowed me to tap into my creative side, while helping others at the same time. As a filmmaker, writer and publicist, I get to help others tell their stories and and share their messages and ideas. I utilize my experience working in film and television along with my passion for writing and creative skills to help visionaries, experts and change makers amplify their voice and transform their stories into impactful media across platforms. My company offers services in traditional PR, in addition to branding and writing services such as ghostwriting and book editing. Whether it is through a news story, a book, a podcast, video or brand message, my goal is to get those messages seen, heard and known. What truly sets us apart from traditional PR companies is that we strive to transcend conventional boundaries in the realms of PR, media and entertainment by bringing together all forms of storytelling from different mediums. This journey into entrepreneurship has taught me that we are much more capable then we tend to give ourselves credit for. Opportunities will always present themselves, but if we don’t get out of our own heads, we will continue to miss those opportunities, not because we are incapable, but because we allow our minds to deceive us and hinder us. To change the narrative in our lives, we must first change the narrative in our minds. At the DME Loft, we empower you to share those narratives so that you can be seen, be heard and be known.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’m relatively new to LA so I am still learning more about the city each day. I’m a big foodie, so I would definitely bring my friend to some restaurants. There are some really great ones in the West Hollywood area that I can’t really choose from but I would just have us eat out there and after that bounce around the different bars over by the rainbow crosswalk. This may sound silly but I absolutely LOVE pancakes and can eat them anytime of the day. I’m obsessed with finding the best pancakes in the city and so far my favorite pancake spot is Bea Bea’s. They have a location in Burbank and one in Glendale and I have been to both and they are both equally amazing. I also love the water and being out in nature, it’s just so peaceful and calming. Griffith Park is a must see, especially the Observatory, it’s a great spot to just overlook the city views. I also really love Malibu, though I don’t like the long drive. I recently discovered the sea caves over at Carrillo State Beach. Although they weren’t as impressive as I was expecting, the view over there by the ocean is simply spectacular.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would love to give a big shout out to author and entrepreneur, Eva Chavez, my coach, mentor and friend who has believed in me and supported me in every way possible, even when I didn’t believe in myself. Without her support, I don’t know if I would be where I am today. Because of her, I have been able to push past my self-doubt, fear and limiting beliefs to go after what I want.
