We had the good fortune of connecting with C. James and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi C., we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Ever since I first began making music, I have been deeply insecure and self-conscious of sharing my songs with anyone. I have always been anxious with the thought of taking any major risk to pursue music full time as a career. Instead, I went to college and chose what I thought was a safe career in teaching. This ended up being great as I realized that I loved to teach and watch others grow. However, as life experiences mounted, my desire to share them through song grew. It wasn’t until recently that I began taking more risks with sharing my music (at the strong encouragement of one of my best friends and producer Peter Fenn). My point is, not everyone is programmed to drop everything and chase their dreams. Some people are like me, and learn to accept risk taking as part of life. Either way is perfectly fine.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My songs are a direct reflection of who I am. I come from the small farming town of Buttonwillow, CA, whose barren country streets and slow moving energy are a constant theme in my music. The town has a population of less than 2,000, with one grocery mart and a small post office. Growing up there was great, as I had the freedom as a child to explore and learn from experience. However, being so isolated from major cities and people in general, I developed a mindset of inadequacy when I began creating music and writing my own songs. The songs are stories of real relationships and personal anxieties that I think many people could relate to. “Small town folk/soul” is how I describe it. The journey has not been easy, as I have always struggled with the idea sharing my songs with anyone. Through the process I’ve learned to let my guard down, and allow people to connect through their own means. This is something I become prouder of by the day.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My start in music wouldn’t have been possible without the encouragement and support of best-friend and fellow artist Peter Fenn. In addition I want to shoutout my fiance and best-friend Monique Lugo, who has been a constant source of support and inspiration for all my work.
